Laura Bohnet BSN, RN, CBIS, CCM, born on October 21, 1982, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2024. Growing up, Laura was always sure of herself, never one to back down from a challenge. She attended the City of Royal Oak School district until 11th grade, after which she transferred to Bishop Foley for her final two years of high school. An exceptional soccer player, Laura played on state travel teams and was highly sought after for her skills. In 1995 she received the Presidential Sports Award from Bill Clinton.
Laura began her college journey at Alma College for a year before transferring to Oakland University. There, she served as a Resident Assistant and graduated with a degree in Psychology. Her career path led her to the University of Detroit Mercy, where she worked as a Hall Director. With a passion for helping others, Laura qualified for the second-degree Nursing program and earned her nursing degree through the intensive program. She also achieved many special training certificates and became a Certified Brain Injury Specialist, Certified Case Manager, and Nurse Educator.
On October 25, 2014, Laura married the love of her life, Brian. Together, they shared an incredible bond, traveling the world, making friends, and creating cherished memories. Their favorite destinations included Aruba and various national parks, and they shared a mutual love for pickleball.
Over the past three years, Laura faced her medical challenges with grace and determination, embodying the spirit of a true warrior. She never complained and maintained a remarkable outlook on life. Laura's radiant smile could light up any room, and she was often described as spectacular. Her ability to make personal connections with everyone she met made it nearly impossible not to like her.
To cherish her memory Laura leaves behind her devoted husband, Brian, and their two beloved Labrador fur babies, Chloe Belle, a service dog, and Dagwood, Laura’s therapy dog. She is survived by her loving parents, George Paul and Carol Wakerley, her brothers Charles and Thomas Wakerley, and her mother-in-law Shari Willerer, brother-in-law Jeffrey Bohnet, and sister-in-law Kaitlyn Bohnet and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A celebration of Laura's life will be held at Proud Lake State Park in Wixom in the coming weeks. Details will be posted on Laura’s Facebook page.
Rather than receiving flowers or other gestures of remembrances, it was Laura’s wish that donations be made to “North Sky Raptor Sanctuary” a non-profit organization that was deeply meaningful to Laura.
Laura's incredible spirit, loving nature, and unwavering strength will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.
