James John Copi, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and educator, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2024, at the age of 83. Born on May 16, 1941, in Monroe, MI, Jim was the son of John Louis Copi Jr. and Katherine Mary (Dobrozdravic) Copi. He was preceded in death by Sara, his cherished wife and soulmate for over 50 years.
Jim was the proud father of Sherri (Eric) Smith, Craig Copi, Keith (Angela) Copi, Gary (Janna) Copi, Douglas (Sarah) Copi, Janene (Andrew) Kummer, Scott Copi, Kristi (Troy) Wilmott, Ryan (Steven) Copi, and Todd (Kaitlyn) Copi, and a beloved grandfather to 17 grandchildren: Rachel Smith, Nick Copi, Jackson Copi, Justin Smith, Owen Kummer, Alexander Kummer, Jonas Copi, Katherine Copi, Ella Copi, John Copi, Adam Copi, Felix Copi, Ryder Wilmott, Rylee Wilmott, Silas Copi-Kriz, Louis Copi, and Piper Copi-Kriz.
A devoted brother, Jim is survived by his siblings, Rose (Ken) Swartz, Margaret (Larry) Salow, Elaine (Jim) Vanhaerents, Carol (Wayne) McCarty, Anita Gebard, and David (Maureen) Copi. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ron and Thomas. Jim’s love and unwavering support for his family will forever be remembered.
As a dedicated educator, Jim profoundly impacted his community. He earned his Ph.D. from Wayne State University and spent over 30 years as a professor of Biology at Madonna University. His passion for science and learning shaped the lives of countless students, and his kindness left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Beyond the classroom, Jim found joy in life’s simple pleasures. An avid fisherman, he loved bowling, bird-watching, and spending time with family. He was a devoted member of St. Colette Catholic Church and a long-time parishioner at St. Michael the Archangel in Livonia, where he served his faith community. Jim exemplified his devotion as a member of the Knights of Columbus and a long-standing leader in the Boy Scouts of America at St. Michael.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Denise for her unwavering care and support for Jim and Sara over the past 13 years.
Jim will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all the lives he touched. Now at peace, he is joyfully reunited with his beloved Sara in the presence of the Lord.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, November 18, 2024, at 11:00 AM at St. Colette Catholic Church, with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM. The Knights of Columbus will lead a Rosary preceding the Mass. A luncheon, open to all, will follow in St. Colette’s Activity Center.
