My prayers to the family.  May they find Gods peace during this turbulent time.  I  have been dealing with Greg for over 40 years. He was a wonderful person, friend, and mentor. He always carried a smile and positive attitude every time we met. His knowledge and presence will be missed in the hobby.  I will miss him. Thank you Greg for being such a great friend!

To the Mellon Family- Mr. Mellon made a positive lasting impact on my life and his locker room motivational chants still echo in my mind.  I’ve passed them on to my sons so they too remember that they are somebody!  Playing basketball for him was a privilege I will not soon forget!  I am very sorry for your loss and hope you continue to find comfort in your memories together.


Greg helped me overcome a difficult event in my life, told me to look in the mirror and say your going to have a great day! Over the years, he was always a kind and generous person to me that helped me see a better future and be grateful for today. I will miss him very much and I know so many others will as well. The coin world has lost one of their greatest assets.  Greg led by example.   Always with a smile and a kind word.  Always willing to help anyone who asked him to share his knowledge on rare coins.

Ron and I are going to miss him tremendously, he was a wonderful person to have as a colleague and a great friend.

My condolences to Greg’s family and all of Greg’s colleagues.   
I was a lucky one to know Greg back in the day.  Many years ago, I worked for a numismatic company and Greg and the owner of my company were great friends and colleagues.    I would love the days that Greg would visit and do business.   I was just a bystander but could listen to Greg and my boss talk to strategize on the market, review grading results on coins, talk about what is coming….

I had no idea that Greg had a Law Degree, I only knew him in the numismatic realm.  Greg was a famous person in numismatics, and I love reading how he mentored others in the business.

Greg’s smile was the biggest grin I ever saw – and I will not forget it.    Cool is my word to describe Greg.  He was a cool guy !   



My most sincere prayers for Greg and his family. I met Greg four years ago while just getting back into numismatics. He took concern in my inexperience and lack of knowledge and schooled me in the basics. Without his time, effort, and genuine concern I would not have enjoyed my hobby half as much. Always a warm greeting, smile, and laugh. His humor was matched only by his knowledge and caring. I will never forget him 

I’ve had the privilege and, sometimes,  the challenge of working for Greg for the past 23 years! I’ve never known anyone who worked as hard or as passionate as Greg!  “It’s not work, it’s fun!”  I never new what new adventure was awaiting when I walked into work, but there were a few constants! Kindness, a sense of humor, and a nudge to always challenge myself to be my best!  Not to mention, a few messes. Actually some really big ones, haha. But, amongst all the clutter… Greg’s mind was so sharp, exact and methodical, with an uncanny ability to focus,  and to prioritize what needed to get done on any given day! 

I thank you, my friend, from the bottom of my heart!  I will miss you greatly!

I remember meeting Greg 46 years ago. He went above and beyond to encourage new coin dealers in the business. In the 90’s, I traveled with Greg and 2 other coin dealers in a private small engine “puddle jumper” to a big coin show. We worked through our stock, playing with coins and doing business in the air.  
Greg will be missed.

Greg was a tremendous coach at St Mikes for the Girls Varsity 1 team. I know as I had the 2 team. He was demanding and successful  be as to what he wanted to communicate   A great role model for his players and and the rest of the basketball program. Rest In Peace Greg!!

Greg was truly a man of integrity, whose great attitude and outlook on life is something I think we all can only hope to achieve. His infectious smile, wit and view of life always made our day each time we saw him. Your friendship will certainly be missed but know that I will be praying for you until we meet again. God’s continued Blessings on you and your family.


To the Mellon Family, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.  My sister and I had the privilege of having Mr. Mellon as our basketball coach during our time at St. Mike’s.  Mr.  Mellon taught us about sportsmanship, commitment, teamwork, and so much more.  We both consider him to be one of our greatest coaches.  We will remember him fondly and drink a Diet Coke or two in his memory!

Best boss I ever had.  There will be a big hole in the numismatic community in the Detroit Metro area for a long time.  Thinking of the family.

Greg was a friend and mentor.  I’ve been in the coin business for 35 years and I never made any real money until I met Greg.  He showed me what to buy and paid me more than anyone else ever had.   Initially Greg would come to our home to see what I had purchased.  It was so much fun having him over.  While he was there he would spend hours talking to my wife about everything but coins.  As long as we fed him pizza and Diet Coke he sometimes stayed until midnight.  Rest easy Buddy!

Brother Greg, University of Detroit fraternity brother, and pledge class member.  I trust you are resting in heaven now.  You brought great joy and even greater amounts of laughter to me during our formative college years.

I share in your loss. Greg was a wonderful guy.  He was always ready to laugh at a joke or share his opinion on any subject under the sun. I remember with  fondness all of the times we spent together. Greg was  a completely unique individual who will be remembered and missed by friends and family.

Our family is so sorry to hear of the passing of Greg.  He was our daughter's basketball coach for two years at St. Michael in Livonia.  He taught our daughter many things about the game of basketball but more so, he taught her about sportsmanship and to be the best with the ability that God gave you.  He truly loved coaching the girls.
Vaya Con Dios Greg, you will be missed. 

Greg will be sadly and profoundly missed.  For over 40 years, whenever I had a numismatic question or needed an opinion he gladly responded with astounding detail and accuracy.

From all of us from Toledo Coin Exchange, our deepest condolences for our friend and mentor Greg Mellon.  Saturday mornings will never be the same without Greg.  We enjoyed listening to him and Clyde reminisce about the good old days of coin collecting and coin shows.  I appreciate that he was always the willing teacher, happy to impart his wisdom and knowledge, asking nothing in return.  He bought us pizza one very busy Saturday at the shop.  When the delivery driver came in, Greg paid for the order, and tipped the young man $100.  The driver asked if Greg made a mistake and meant to give him something lower.  Greg told him, that he was young once, and did a similar job.   With a smile, he said  "I remember where I came from, and how I started.  Keep it kid."
The driver thanked him, and stared at the hundred smiling, not paying attention to anything else as he walked out.  Greg easily made this strangers day, and went about his business like it was nothing.  
A great example to all of us, and to me especially.
Thank you Greg, we love and miss you.

So many over the years but the funniest was when we went to st James to scout and Greg had his walker at the time so he got soaked going into the gym.  I offered to get his car and bring it around in front.   Greg gave me keys but forgot to tell me all the pedals were on the wheel instead of the floor.  When I brought it around I said you might have told me and he laughed and said oh yeah lyn sorry.  I told him I was sorry but he had a tree in the back.
