Rev. Carl Edward Zerweck III, age 66, of Detroit, Michigan passed away on December 13, 2022. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri on December 15, 1955 to the late Carl and Jean (Garrett) Zerweck, Jr. He was the oldest of three children. He is survived by his sisters Jill (Paul) Schroeder and Joy (Patrick) Kelleher. Carl was a beloved brother, brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle, stepfather, and grandfather.
Carl was a graduate of Parkway Central High School in Chesterfield, Missouri. He received his undergraduate degree from Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth, Texas and his Master of Divinity from Brite Divinity School in Ft. Worth, Texas. Carl spent the last 12 years serving as the founder and Executive Director of Rippling Hope in Detroit, Michigan, a non-profit ministry devoted to rebuilding neighborhoods and community spirit. He was currently serving as pastor of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ-Disciples of Christ in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.
Carl is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He served as associate pastor at Community Christian Church in Richardson, Texas followed by pastor at Disciples Christian Church in Plano, Texas. Additionally, during his time in Texas, he served as Executive Director of Plano Area Habitat for Humanity. Over the course of 35 years, Carl was involved in starting 3 Habitat for Humanity organizations, helped build 30+ Habitat homes around the country, in addition to 15 new church builds or rebuilds.
Following his mission in Texas, Carl became the Director of Disciples Volunteering through the Division of Homeland Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where he personally led or participated in 100+ mission trips and projects to help the church respond to disasters throughout the United States. His passion was working for justice, building, working with volunteers and seeing how God’s message through hands on mission transforms lives and changes the world! In Carl’s words: “I gave my all. I did my best. I tried to make a difference.”
Services to celebrate Carl’s life will be held on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ-Disciples of Christ 26550 Cherry Hill Rd. Dearborn Heights, Michigan 48127. Visitation will be held 10:00-11:30am followed by a service of celebration at 11:30am. There will be a luncheon following the service at the church.
