Born April 23, 1936, in Paris, France to Edward and Fanny. From his earliest years, Steve’s physical and mental strength were tested as he and his family were forced to flee their home to a courageous family’s farm in Grenoble, France when the Nazi’s invaded. After spending five years in hiding, Steve and his parents arrived in Savannah, GA in 1946; later settling in Newark, NJ. Steve used comic books to support his learning of the English language. After excelling in his academic studies, he continued his education at Rutgers School of Pharmacy. Realizing that pharmacy was not his ultimate passion, he studied medicine in Amsterdam and later graduated Wayne State Medical School in 1965. As an Internist, Steve went on to expertly treat his patients until the age of 80.
In addition to a successful career in medicine, Steve met the love of his life at a local dance. On September 15, 1962, he married Alice Joy Teichler. He and Alice created a wonderful life with their children, Ellen and Paul. Throughout his life, Steve and Alice had endless travel adventures. Whether traveling to Europe, Asia, Australia, South America or throughout North America, they enjoyed learning about the local history and culture. In addition to their passion for travel, Steve and Alice enjoyed attending the symphony, ballet, Broadway productions and the opera. Steve’s love for the arts was deeply personal. He could often be found painting with oil after work or on the weekends. During the summer, Steve, Alice, Paul and Ellen enjoyed playing spirited tennis matches at Four Seasons.
In 1995 and 1996, they lovingly welcomed into the family, Ellen’s husband, Adam Steiner and Paul’s wife, Gail Landman. Their love for life was further enhanced with the addition of their grandsons, Ethan and Brandon, in 2000 and 2003, respectively. They enjoyed listening to Ethan’s jazz concerts and attending Brandon’s many sporting events.
Steve’s love, friendship and sharp wit will be greatly missed by his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
