Dr. Robert L. Augustine, 89, of Livingston, NJ, passed away from a battle with cancer on August 6, 2022.
Bob was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska where he remained until he graduated from Creighton University with a degree in Chemistry in 1954. He received his Masters in 1955 and his Ph.D. in 1957 in Chemistry from Columbia University. Bob joined the Chemistry Faculty at the University of Texas in Austin soon after. In 1961, he joined the Chemistry Faculty at Seton Hall University until he retired from teaching in 1997. After his retirement from teaching, he was Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and continued his research as the Director of the Center for Applied Catalysis at Seton Hall.
In the course of his career, he published more than 130 research articles, 10 books (one of which was reprinted in Japanese) and numerous patents. He also supervised the research of his many graduate students which resulted in 38 doctoral dissertations and 9 master theses. Bob was very well known and highly regarded both nationally and internationally in the field of Chemistry.
Bob received several awards for his remarkable work over the course of his career. They include the McQuaid Medal for distinguished service to Seton Hall University in 1977, the Joseph P. Hyman Award for teaching in 1988, the Paul N. Rylander Award for his contribution to the use of catalysis in 1990, the Henry J. Albert Award for his contribution to catalysis in the field of precious metals in 2003, the Russell E. Malz Award for exceptional service to O.R.C.S. in 2010 and introduction to the Hazard Zet Forward Society in gratitude for unwavering and loyal support for Seton Hall University in 2012.
Bob married the love of his life, Marilyn, in 1957 and they were married for nearly 65 years. They loved traveling the world together. Aside from his love of Chemistry and his family, Bob was a very accomplished wood worker. He made furniture, toys and more for his family, which they will treasure always.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn, his two daughters and son-in-law, Theresa Christie and Mary Sue and Les Szivos, and his two granddaughters, Gabrielle Christie and Christine Szivos.
Friends and family may visit from 4:00-8:00PM Wednesday, August 10th at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home located at 145 E. Mount Pleasant Ave, Livingston, NJ. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00AM on Thursday, August 11th at St. Philomena’s Roman Catholic Church in Livingston, NJ. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover. In lieu of flowers, please honor Bob by contributing to the Seton Hall University Chemistry Department (shu.edu).
