It is with the heaviest heart that we announce the passing of Mark Cameron Hahlbeck, 65, of West Orange, formerly Maplewood, on June 26, 2024. Mark passed peacefully at home, nearly 22 years after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
Mark was born September 15, 1958, in New York, and was the son of the late Sally Joseph Hahlbeck and Kurt J. Hahlbeck, both of Wisconsin. Mark was also the son of the late Warren Potter Vickerman Jr. of New York. He leaves his loving family: wife Amy Singer of West Orange and cherished children Max Potter Hahlbeck of Cranford and Emily Rose Hahlbeck of Bloomfield; his brothers Michael Vickerman (Pamela Wiesen) of Madison, Wisconsin, and Kurt Hahlbeck (Kathy Hahlbeck) of Appleton, Wisconsin. He also leaves a sister Katrina (Katie) Hahlbeck Smith of Appleton; brother-law and sister-in-law Robert Singer and Debra Dennis of Morristown, and the late Stacy Goldstein. Mark was beloved by his nieces and nephews: Daniel Mark Vickerman, Nicholas (Emily) Hahlbeck, Sydney Hahlbeck, Alex Hahlbeck, Ethan Hahlbeck, Jacob Smasal, Alec Smasal, and Michaela Smasal, and Jonah Singer, Ryan Dennis, and Elliot Dennis.
Mark loved life and lived with enthusiasm, soaking up experiences and expressing his creativity through music, textiles, painting, cooking, and most recently sculpture. His kindness made him lasting friends: neighbors, former colleagues, college friends, sculptor friends, furry friends including his soulmate/dog Arlo (even the wildlife he greeted daily around his house and the Reservation), QiGong friends, and his medical team (the office) friends at John Theurer Cancer Center. He savored every one of those connections. Mark was an active participant in all aspects of life, extending from dealing with his illness to performing stand-up comedy in front of a live audience. He was willing to take on any challenge with fearlessness and enthusiasm.
The family will be receiving family and friends Monday, July 1 from 10:15am to 10:45am, with a funeral service to follow, at 11am at Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield. Shiva will follow burial until 6:00 pm at the family home in West Orange.
