Joyce H. Kevelson, was the third child born to Sally and Nathan Winawer. Born and educated in Brooklyn, New York, she attended Brooklyn College and Empire State College, received a Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling from New York University and was awarded a Life Coach certificate from Columbia University. She was employed in the field of psychiatry as a member of interdisciplinary teams at (then-named) Long Island Jewish Hillside Hospital. Professionally, Joyce was also highly respected during her long tenure at Federation Employment and Guidance Services (FEGS) in New York City, a highly regarded major nonprofit health and human services organization. There, as Executive Vice-President in charge of the Manhattan and Queens offices, she supervised an interdisciplinary staff of physicians, nurses, and other health, mental health and human services professionals. In her personal life she was married to Alter Joshua Kevelson (deceased) and bore four children, Robyn Burnside (deceased), Jeffrey Kevelson, and twin sons Andrew and Gary Kevelson. In addition to daughters-in-law, 9 grandchildren and one great grandchild, Joyce will be remembered and missed by not only the nieces, nephews and their children, by her brother, Sidney Winawer and sister Hinda Winawer, but also by her many loving friends and colleagues. Her outgoing, friendly nature, her love of life and family and her strong, definitive leadership were among her many gifts to those who knew and loved Joyce Kevelson.
A funeral service for Joyce will be held Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, NJ 07039. All attendees are requested to be fully vaccinated and wear a mask.
Following the funeral service will be a burial at 1:30 PM at New Montefiore Cemetery, 1180 Wellwood Avenue, West Babylon, NY 11704.
Because of the highly contagious present phase of the Coronavirus pandemic, Shiva will be curtailed and will be limited to family and close friends only. All shiva participants must show proof of vaccination and wear a mask. Shiva hours are Wednesday, January 19th from 2pm to 8pm and Thursday January 20th from 11am to 5pm. Thursday's shiva will include an hour-long zoom segment for those who wish to attend virtually. For further information about Shiva hosts and location, kindly contact a family member.
