As a 10 year old camper at the Y camp, Joe was a big influence in my life and taught me life skills that I use to this day.
Sorry to hear of his passing. I am sure he left a lot of great memories that will assist everyone in the difficult days ahead.

Joey I misses you so much . I remember we walking up and down your block and I remember going to the j c c center. I will remember  you never stop trying even when you were in the hospital you just want to help yourself.  Joey I felt like I was your family 👪 ❤️ I will always love you and your family. Joe Schwartz touched so many lives. As part of our camp family he was a leader, a mentor and a mensch.  I was a camper/staff for many years. And he would always come over and ask me how I was doing. He cared. May his family know all the lives he touched. Our thoughts are with you.

I love the picture of Joe in the hot tub with all his granddaughters.  What a wonderful memory of a man who spent his life making great experiences and memories possible for children / staff of all ages.  

I love that when we were in trouble as staff brats, he was pretty much a surrogate father as he both disciplined us and, whether he knew it or not, didn't quite hide the smirk that told us he must have been a troublemaker once too !  

I'm glad to have known him and glad to know the wonderful family he built in and out of NJY Camps.

Joe was a very special, warm,loving and compassionate man. The funeral today was a loving testament to the amazing and kind man he was. He truly loved all of you, and his whole family. He was always optimistic and a calm voice of reason. He loved his baby brother Jackie and was always there to help him. He was the one who got Jackie his first teaching job in East Harlem. He called his friend who was a principal and the week after their father passed away Jackie became a teacher. When we were looking to buy a house, it was Joe who once again was the voice of reason. We had put a deposit on a lovely home in Flanders. When we took Joe to look at the house he was quite positive and said it was a beautiful home, but Jackie you go to Fordham at night for your doctorate, and then you will be driving all the way out here at midnight, that is not the best place for you to live. Of course we listened to his wise advice and thankfully we did buy our house in Livingston. It was Joe who helped Jackie start Washington Academy. He not only helped monetarily with the seed money to start the school, but he had so many contacts he helped to find a location, desk and office supplies and a printer to make up the first business cards. I still have one of those cards, which showed a profile of George Washington and under that picture it said, Jack Schwartz, PhD. People all laughed at that saying is that a picture of Jack?  Joe was truly loved by all who knew him and he will surely be missed, but will always be remembered and in our hearts.

Joe had tremendous love of his family, including the hundreds of thousand children cared for, protected, mentored and oversaw during  his decades at NJ "Y" Camps.
