.John T. Gunther, 90, passed away on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston. His family will receive friends at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston, 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave., on Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The Funeral Mass celebrating his life will be offered at Our Lady of the Lake Church, 32 Lakeside Ave., Verona, on Saturday at 11:30 AM followed by the entombment service at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.
Born in Bronx, NY, John had lived in Vailsburg and Livingston moving to Verona eighteen years ago. He had served his country honorably as a Marine during World War II and the Korean War. He had been a Newark police officer for thirty-four years retiring as Lieutenant in 1990. After retiring from the Newark Police Department, he continued to work for the Star Ledger for eighteen years.
He was a member of the Marine Corps League in Kearny, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Newark Fraternal Order of Police, Superior Officers Association and the Old Guard.
He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife Marie in 1991 and his sisters Marie, Sissy and Catherine. Surviving are his devoted daughters Kathleen M. McCue, Elizabeth M. Corrente and husband Paul and Theresa M. Shihanian and husband George; his loving grandchildren: Kyle, Scott and Kevin McCue, Michael, Christine and Paul Corrente, Lisa and George Shihanian and cherished great granddaughter, Mackenzie McCue. John is also survived by his sisters Patricia Barry and Eileen Smith.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Way, Memphis, TN 38105 would be greatly appreciated.
