Irwin was born in Brooklyn NY to parents Harry and Irene Dorros. He served in the US Army Signal Corps in Japan during the Korean War from 1950-1951.
Irwin earned BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from MIT and was awarded the Doctor of Engineering Science degree from Columbia University in electrical engineering in 1962. Dr. Dorros’ professional career spanned 47 years in the Bell System starting at Bell Telephone Laboratories where he led programs in a number of communications technologies, including early cellular radio and Picturephone. His career continued at AT&T where he led the Network Planning Division and served as the lead executive in formulating AT&T technical positions for the legislative proceedings and eventual breakup and transition of AT&T and the Bell company spin-offs. Other than a decade consulting after he retired, Dr. Dorros finished his career at Bell Communications Research where he was responsible for the work program for the 5,000 R&D scientists, engineers, and software specialists. Throughout his lifetime, Dr. Dorros served on 24 professional, community, and education boards, committees, and councils. He earned 10 awards, including being named twice One of 25 Most Influential People in the Communications Industry by Communications Week. Dr. Dorros has over 50 technical publications and is the holder of 5 patents.
In addition to his accomplished career, Irwin always made time for and cherished his family. He lived in the Chatham area for the past 37 years, and enjoyed golf, photography, travel, and gardening.
Predeceased by his daughter Gail and his wife of 64 years, Janet, Irwin is survived by two sons Mark and his wife Sandra, and Gerry and his wife Arielle, and 6 grandchildren. A graveside funeral service will be held 11:00 Tuesday June 25th at Mount Freedom Hebrew Cemetery, Randolph, NJ.
