I wish to extend my condolences to Virginia and Family Members.

I met Carl when we were both students starting our freshman year at Newark College of Engineering. During those years at NCE, I knew Carl to be considerate, intelligent and  a very decent, likeable classmate. I, of course, also knew Virginia since we women were a rarity at NCE during those years. Even though we all did not get together much in the years following graduation, a friendship had formed then which has endured up to the present time.
So let our thoughts dwell on all the fond memories of Carl and celebrate his accomplishments and his life. 

Here he is at the dedication of perhaps his favorite Milestone with left to right, Warner Johnston, NYC Section Vice Chair, Lew Terman, IEEE President, Kirit Dixit, North Jersey Section Chair,  Charles Rubenstein, Region 1 Chair Elect, and  Robert Pellegrino, METSAC Chair, at the West Orange, NJ, Municipal Building, on Oct 18, 2008.

Carl, as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering(IEEE) History Center  Milestone Coordinator and member of the North Jersey Section, provided the leadership in nominating the Edison Laboratories in West Orange, NJ, as an IEEE Engineering and Computing Milestone. 

He not only worked on the proposals, but attended the plaque dedications and wrote about them as the Associate Editor of the IEEE Power and Energy Magazine.  In an article in the July/August 2009 issue, p.58, he states:  “The principal purpose of the program is to promote public and scientific community awareness, knowledge, and understanding of the importance and rich history of electrotechnology.”

‘ Thomas A. Edison West Orange Laboratories and Factories, 1887’  milestone which reads  
“Thomas Alva Edison, a West Orange resident from 1886 until his death in 1931, established his final and most comprehensive laboratory and factory complex about one-half mile (0.8 km) north of here in 1887. Edison’s visionary combination in one organization of basic and applied research, development, and manufacturing became the prototype for industrial enterprises worldwide. Work here resulted in more than half of Edison’s 1,093 patents.”




Dear Virginia my loving thoughts go out to you.  You and  Carl were such a wonderful duo. Enjoyed working with you both on the Reunion Committee. We were lucky to have lived  thru the times we did. Keep strong.  Love Andrea and Bob Urban

I am saddened by the passing of Carl Sulzberger. My condolences to Virginia. We attended many IEEE PES Meetings together. I was always happy to see that Carl was attending with Virginia.  

As an engineer and a person interested in the history of technology, 
Carl was an excellent person in both areas. I always appreciated his views on subjects because of his technical and legal educations brought a different viewpoint to the subjects being discussed.

Carl will be missed. Rest  in peace

Carl was a trustworthy, knowledgeable, accommodating, and professional resource during my early years upon joining the law department in 1988 and a wonderful colleague through the years until his retirement.

Virginia my condolences. Carl was a key factor in my return to using film in photography. Our talks where he would tell me about his equipment and photography stories sparked my interest in film photography again. Since then i have taken many great pictures with film cameras all thanks to Carl. May he rest in peace and he wont be forgotten.

I had the opportunity to work with Carl while he volunteered on the IEEE History Committee and several IEEE Milestones, and it was an honor to associate with someone so dedicated to the history of his profession and to maintaining standards of history rather than myth. I will miss Carl's unique combination of technical knowledge, logic, and historical passion.

 Bob and I are deeply saddened by Carl’s passing.  He has been a pillar of the Mannett family.  Carl’s ability to recall dates and details of events was truly remarkable.  
I was lucky to be apart of your wedding and loved hearing all about your many trips to Europe.  Our lives and those of my children have been enriched because of you and Carl. 
Our thoughts and hearts will be with you in the coming days.  



Fond memories from Hepworth Street gatherings. This photo was from April 1995. Carl was a devoted son and husband and patient with his youngest cousins.  Our family is so grateful for his presence in our lives. 


This photo was taken in October 1993 when Carl and I took my son Michael to see the Essex Steam Engine.  This was one of Carl’s favorite places in CT along with the Griswold Inn and Mystic seaport. So much history and now I will struggle to remember the dates and details without him filling in the blanks. 


Dear Virginia and family,
We grew up with Carl in Livingston, went all through school with him, and enjoyed his friendship ever since.  He was one of the best in every way.  In high school, he, Harold, and a few others, like Zorskie and Denzer, somehow understood the inscrutable Blair Krimmel, our math teacher, while I struggled. 
 In recent years he was always there when the class needed organizing for reunions.  
We remember him fondly and lament his passing.

I worked with Carl at PSE&G doing substation licensing.  He was always the lawyer that I would hope was assigned since his engineering experience kept things on track.  He was also a great person and made things much easier.

I am very sorry indeed to hear of Carl's death. He was a wonderful friend and colleague, and I feel extremely fortunate to have worked with him on IEEE History activities, especially the Milestones Program. His wise council and practical approach to solving problems was enormously valuable, and shaped much of the way the program functions today. It will live on as part of his legacy. His good humour in the Morocco matter was vital in helping us all keep our perspective. 

  Carl has been a dear friend and mentor to many who have had the honor of working with him. His work and his efforts with IEEE will continue forever in the many journal pages left behind.

I had the privilege of knowing Carl for two decades when he was the editor of the History Column of the IEEE Power and Energy Society. In that role he welcomed and encouraged any ideas I submitted and pursued the editorial tasks with care and a rare but wonderfully very light touch that always acknowledged primarily the intent of the writer. 

He also encouraged and guided me through the submission of the Baltimore & Ohio RR electrification for IEEE Milestone designation and recommended me as keynote speaker at the event. He subsequently encouraged and guided the Milestone designation of the Grand Central Terminal electrification by myself and John L. Sprague.

He was the pivotal figure in introducing my power history manuscript to the IEEE History Center publications program which then became my book NY Power. In summary, the trail of all my activities with the IEEE always leads back to Carl. 

Beyond that I enjoyed many hours of conversations about a wide variety of topics from power topics to Buicks, to railroads, to Lionel trains.

As I told his loving wife Virginia upon learning of his passing, I feel I have lost not just a friend and mentor but also a surrogate uncle. Amid the sense of loss, I feel gratitude for having known him, for all that he did to assist, guide, and promote my work and interests.

To Virginia and all his family and friends I extend my deepest condolences and pray that the memories of all the good times will assuage the pain of loss. We were all blessed to have him in our lives.

Heartfelt condolences to Virginia and the family.  Carl and I first met in kindergarten, and were in the first graduating class from Livingston High School in 1957.  We both went on to engineering studies.  Many memories of the good times in high school, and at our frequent class reunions.  Carl was meticulous in keeping the class records up to date and we enjoyed working together on our spectacular 50th class reunion.  A real gentleman, always fun to be with.  Rest in peace. I have known Carl since he and my cousin Virginia were married 54 years ago. I have many memories of Carl, and a few of them really stand out. My favorite memories are of the visits Carl and Virginia made to my parents in Shenandoah, PA. Carl was always gracious and truly interested in conversations with my parents. Later, when my father passed away, Carl and Virginia came several times to celebrate my mother’s birthday, which was the day after Carl’s. They both attended her 90th birthday celebration, and Virginia, of course, took many photos. My husband Brian fondly remembers conversations he had with Carl about batteries, a subject they were both interested in. 

Brian and I extend our most sincere sympathies to Virginia, to Sandra and Bruce, and to all the members of Carl’s family. 

Carl was like a “brother” to me for 54+ years. He was supportive and encouraging. We occasionally watched Jeopardy together and I marveled at his intellectual capacity. Often I called him “a walking encyclopedia!”

Carl, Virginia (my sister), my husband Bruce and I had the pleasure of sharing trips, dinners, holidays and other memories together. 

I will miss him immensely, I already do. Carl holds a special place in my heart. Rest in peace from you loving sister in law, Sandra.

Uncle Carl always treated me, and then my husband, like a member of the family. He always showed true interest and shared encouragement in all our endeavors. He will certainly be missed. 

Jeff and I have been friends with Carl and Virginia for many years. Two very special people.  I remember not long after we met we were at their home taking pictures on the TV of the first moon landing.  Such an exciting time.  We have been in touch all these years and so deeply saddened for this loss.  I will have many fond memories always.  Please accept my heartfelt condolences to Virginia and all his family.

Virginia,  Lynne and I were just reflecting about you and Carl (over dinner last night) and recalling all the joyful trips to NYC for theater shows that Lynne enjoyed with you and others.  When Carl would me me at the train station we enjoyed talking about his field work and searching for historic treasures at construction sites when “ground was being broken”.  

You have both been treasured in our memories and have been in our prayers as we are “all so blessed” as our thoughts are with you . . . in deepest sympathy.
