It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Michael Lewis Gabriel on Monday, November 11, 2024, at the age of 59. Born in Hampton, VA, on June 11, 1965, he was the son of the late Lewis Austin and Lois Long Payne.
Michael was the devoted and loving husband of Eleni Gabriel (nee Gavrilis), whom he married on September 18, 2010. Together, they shared a beautiful family, and Michael’s greatest joy and accomplishment were his children, Maritsa and Manny, whom he loved fiercely. His commitment to family was unwavering, and time spent with them—whether traveling, watching classic movies, or simply sharing laughter—was always his top priority.
In addition to his wife and children, Michael is survived by his sister, Jean Shepherd, and numerous extended family members, including cousins Jerry, Tammy, and Bonnie, nieces, nephews, and brothers- and sisters-in-law, a mother and father-in-law. He was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Valerie Trivett.
A proud graduate of Fauquier High School, Michael went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Zion Bible Institute and his master’s in theology from Assemblies of God Theological Seminary. After serving as a pastor for several years in Virginia, Michael transitioned to a successful career in banking, working as the regional manager for Chevy Chase Bank. In recent years, he became self-employed contractor and a master plumber within the family plumbing business.
Michael was an avid lover of the outdoors. He enjoyed hiking, swimming, and was a passionate diver, finding peace and adventure in the natural world. He was also dedicated to staying fit, earning a black belt in Okinawan Shorinryu Karate. A lifelong music lover, Michael was an accomplished guitarist and singer, with a particular love for dancing with his wife. He also cherished coaching his children in music, especially vocal performance, and revelled in watching them perform on stage.
Known for his laughter, infectious smile, and curiosity, Michael was the kind of person who would always go the extra mile to help others and to find answers to any question. He had a unique gift for making everyone around him feel seen and heard.
A Celebration of Michael’s Life will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach. The visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m.
