James "Jimmy" William Cox, Sr. 87, of Longs, SC passed away Monday, July 10, 2023, at his home. Born on March 29, 1936, in Reidville, South Carolina, James was the son of the late William Roscoe Cox and Catherine Snow Cox Dempsey Hughes. His son, James W. Cox, Jr. preceded him in death.
Jimmy served in the Navy on the USS Forrestal and was stationed in Cuba. When he completed his military service, he returned to Reidville, SC where he began farming. He began “Jimmy Cox Farms” in the Spartanburg area growing the business to the point of being one of the largest peach producers in the state. He sold the farm business in Spartanburg and relocated with his wife and sons to Myrtle Beach in 1985 where he grew peaches in Longs, SC.
As well as farming, Jimmy had an overwhelming love for fishing and his family. The best times of his life were when he was fishing with his sons and or grandchildren out of Ocean Isle Beach, NC or Punta Gorda, FL; having any kind of meal with his family; and loving on his wife Elsie. He was an incredibly gifted and dedicated father and businessman whose greatest goals in life were to instill a strong work ethic and moral compass in his children and to pass on to them the desire to leave the world a better place. There are an untold number of men and women that Jimmy helped in many quiet ways throughout his life because “that’s what you are supposed to do.”
Surviving in addition to his loving wife of 63 years, Elsie Blanton Cox; are his son, Dr. William R. Cox, II "Billy"; daughter-in-law, Martha-Murray Handback Cox (Billy’s Wife); daughter-in-law, Lucinda Cox; granddaughters, Blanton-Harris Cox, Emily Cox Collins (husband, Blake); grandson, William Roscoe "Ross" Cox, III; great-grandson, Bryce Collins. He is also survived by a sister, Carolyn Yeargin and his nephews Steve Yeargin and Ken Yeargin.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at Lee Funeral Home and Crematory, 11840 Highway 90, Little River, SC 29566.
