Annelle Michel Ducheine peacefully passed away in her sleep, on the morning of January 8, 2024. She was surrounded by her loved ones, as she transitioned to sit along the side of her mother, Lucina Michel. She was 89. Annelle Michel was born on July 6, 1934, in Cap-Haitien, Haiti. She was the only daughter of Lucina Michel and Bonicias Perard. She was raised in Cap-Haitien. She initially attended Mere Beige Elementary School. Upon graduation she attended Nesida High School. She continued her professional studies at the Filles de la Sagesse Nursing School.
Early in her professional nursing career, she went to work at St. Therese Hospital in Hinche, Haiti. While at Hinche, she met and later married Leurame Ducheine in 1960. Her nursing journey took her to the Albert Schweitzer Hospital, at Deschapelles. She eventually moved there to continue her career in nursing. During that decade of the 60’s her family grew to include 5 sons; Jenner, Landy, Yvan, Dick and Patrick. At the urging of her lifelong friends Wystha Paul, RN and Emile St-Phard, MD, Annelle immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, around 1966. She obtained her nursing license, and joined her dear friends, Suzie Dejoie and Edith Magloire to continue to pursue career advancement opportunities. She completed her Master’s Degree in Nursing at Saint Joseph College in Brooklyn.
Annelle was a very pious, loving, and caring individual. Her close friends would tell you that she was always available to assist family and friends, through good times and bad. To those who knew her, she was a well-known preacher of education and achievement. She inspired and motivated all of her children to do their best. She had a quiet demeanor, one that Landy and Yvan knew how to push and get her most gorgeous smile, a smile that would often turn into quiet laughter. She celebrated each and every achievement of her family and friends. She danced at every party to her favorite band which was Orcheste Septentrional.
Annelle was a great cook. She had a great fondness for pastries. Family friend, Jean Cane, reminds us that she always loved to bake, a passion she displayed since her days in Hinche. She was quick to volunteer to bake; cakes, multi-level communion cakes, pastries, vegetable pies, shepherd pies or meat pies for all events and occasions. Her kids and family could not wait for their birthdays to arrive, so she could bake her world famous and delicious upside-down pineapple cake, with the top layer covered with pineapple slices, cherry in the middle of each slice, surrounded by raisins.
Annelle was an avid shopper, with a love for bargains. During her days in Brooklyn, she frequented the likes of Mays (not Macy’s), Korvette’s, Abraham & Strauss (A&S), Alexanders… and many more. Unfortunately, most of those stores are no longer around, they are a source of fond memories to those of us that remember our times there with her. In her last few years, she got her sons to discover her new favorite, Dollar Tree.
Professionally, she worked many years at several hospitals throughout New York and New Jersey. She spent most of her career at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. She retired in the late 90’s and moved to Haiti to be with her elderly mother, affectionately known as “Tante Cina.” While in Haiti, she met and raised Selon Pierre, Esq. as her last son. After Tante Cina’s passing, Annelle eventually moved back to New Jersey to be close to her sons and their families, where she continued to be the source of inspiration, guidance and support to all of her children and grandchildren, her inherited sons and daughters, and those close to her.
