John James “Jim” Hunter passed away in the morning of January 9, 2024 in his home in Lincoln, California after a brief illness with lung cancer. Born in Waterloo, Iowa on May 26, 1942, Jim was the son of Edward and Genevieve (McCoy) Hunter.
Jim moved to Boone, Iowa, shortly after his birth and was raised there until the 9th grade, when the family moved to Clinton, Iowa. Jim’s nickname throughout his high school years was “Boone”. While attending Clinton High School, Jim met the love of his life, his wife, Tina, who was a student at Mount St. Claire Academy. Jim and Tina were married on January 19, 1963. During their nearly 61 years of marriage, they brought three wonderful children into this world, who in turn have given Jim and Tina five wonderful grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Jim and Tina moved from Clinton, Iowa to the Sacramento, California area – eventually ending up in Lincoln, California.
Jim had many jobs throughout his long life, but really enjoyed teaching swimming to all ages, and coaching the YMCA swim team in Clinton. Known as “Hunter’s Catfish”, Jim’s teams were very successful and lead to future leaders, coaches, and teachers. Jim’s spare time was spent with family, travel, and on the golf course with his close friends.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Christine Elizabeth “Tina” Hunter, and his loving children: Jim (Seana) Hunter of El Sobrante, California, Kristin (Wayne) Yeager of Elk Grove, California, and Tony (Carol) Hunter of Camanche, Iowa, his grandchildren: Erika, Paige, CJ, Beth, and Ryan, and his great-grandchildren: Kylan, Ellie and Gemma. His is also survived by his brothers, Robert and Gerald and his sister JoAnn. Jim was proceeded in death by his father, mother, and brother Tommy.
Jim will be remembered for his devotion to Jesus Christ - his Lord and Savior, providing for his family, and for all those he taught to swim. His funeral services will be on Friday, January 19, 2024, at 10:30am at St. Clare Catholic Church located at 1950 Junction Blvd, Roseville, California. Lincoln Funeral Home is assisting with family with arrangements, and online condolences may be expressed by visiting their website (https://www.lincolnfh.net ). A celebration of life will be in the summer of 2024 in Clinton/Camanche, Iowa, with the date to be determined later. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to be made to the Jim Hunter Memorial Fund with the Clinton High School Swimming Program at 1401 12th Ave No., Clinton, Iowa 52732.
