Bert Wallace Gunn passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife Barbara and family beside him in Lincoln, CA on May 22, 2019. Born August 10, 1928 in Oakland, CA to Wallace and Mary Gunn, Bert lived a wonderful life of 90 years creating quite a legacy for his family. He was preceded in death by his brother Donald and son Robert. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Barbara, daughter Cathy (Steve), son Donald (Stephanie), daughter Janice (Dennis), and son Stephen (Kristin). He was a loving father of 5 and grandfather/great grandfather to 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Bert loved all sports, played basketball and belonged to Circle C at Cal. He was passionate about his beloved Cal Golden Bears (Go Bears!!). He was part of the ROTC band in High School. He spent some of his early years growing up in Santa Rosa taking on odd jobs such as picking hops and prunes to earn money.
He graduated from UC Berkley in 1950 and worked for a lumber importer initially after school. He then joined Watson & Meehan (Cummins) and spent 42 years there as an accountant, controller and became secretary of the company. He also spent 8 years in the US Navy Reserves serving at Alameda Naval Air Station. This was also at a time when he married the love of his life Barbara and they were starting a family.
He was a loving and devoted father sharing all the duties with Barbara in raising 5 children. He provided well for his family and created a wonderful legacy for his children to follow. He was known for his “we’ll make it work” attitude with his family. He too great pride in his children’s accomplishments and supported their many interest. He never knew a stranger and could strike up a long interesting entertaining conversation with anyone. His smile was infectious, and he was admired and loved by all who encountered him.
He lived a wonderful 90 years, loving husband who spoiled his wife, amazing father and human being. He is sorely missed by his family and friends but not forgotten. He left a lasting legacy of goodness in our hearts and souls.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday July 13th, 2019 at St James Episcopal Church at 479 L Street, Lincoln, CA 95648.
