Bill was a graduate of St. Gerard High School in Lima before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps which began his respected military career. He proudly served with the Marines during WWII and later with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Overall, his active and reserve service to our country spanned 35 years before his retirement in 1982 as Infantry Colonel in the Army. Bill was a graduate of the resident Infantry Officers Basic and Advanced courses, the Command and General Staff College and the Industrial College of National Defense University.
In civilian life, he retired from the former Nickel Plate Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railways as Conductor. Bill was a life member of the Marine Corps League, VFW Post 1275, Military Order of the Cootie, Military Officers of America, BPOE 54 and a former national president of the China Marine Association.
Bill will be deeply missed by loving wife, Jennifer Tierney; eight children, William Tierney of FL, Michael Tierney and his wife Debbie of Cabot, AR; Denise Holland and her husband Raymond of Englewood, OH, Kevin Tierney and his wife Cathy of Lima, OH, Christopher Tierney and his wife Sandi of Lebanon, OH, Erin Sturgeon and her husband Rick of Amelia, OH, Brian Tierney of Lima, OH, Kelly Barry and her husband John of Wapakoneta, OH; 23 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Howell of VA; one nephew and three nieces.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his former wife, Evelyn Rupert Tierney; sister, Susie Smith; brothers-in-law, Bill Smith and Jim Howell; and grandsons, Herbert Johnson, Jr., and Travis Tierney.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 16, 2017 at SIFERD-ORIANS FUNERAL HOME, 506 North Cable Rd in Lima with Fr. Jim Szobonya officiating. Graveside Services with military honors to follow at Gethsemani Cemetery. Friends and family may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at the funeral home with Wake Service at 7:30 p.m.
