Julia Taylor was born in Nashville, TN on April 7,1930 to John and Edith Taylor. After her father’s early passing, she and her mother relocated to Atlanta when she was four, to a home on Wieuca Road in Buckhead.
Julia attended R. L Hope Elementary School, North Fulton High School and continued her education graduating from the University of Alabama. She married Richard (Dick) McDonald in 1958 and they eventually settled in the Nancy Creek Heights subdivision for over 47 years, where they raised their two children. She was active in all their activities and encouraged them to do their best every day.
Her children attended Georgia Tech and so she became a GT sports fan and passionately cheered them on as she watched them play on TV. She was also a huge Atlanta Braves fan from the time they moved to Atlanta in 1965. Outside of her family she developed a passion for the love of gardening. It was evident in her outdoor garden at her home – legendary, some might say! She meticulously tended to rose bushes and her yard bloomed magnificently all year. Inside she had an amazing and beautiful array of violets in which she took great delight.
She also enjoyed serving as a docent at the Georgia Governor’s Mansion, the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center and volunteered at Dunwoody United Methodist Church. Julia loved her family, friends and church community. She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years Richard (Dick) A McDonald, her mother Edith Steadwell Taylor and her father John Taylor.
She is survived by a son Rick, daughter-in-law Kristen and their combined family, daughter Peggy, son-in-law John, grandsons David (Kelsey and great-grandson Henry) and Stephen (Mandy).
A service celebrating Julia McDonald’s life will be held on Tuesday May 30, 2023 at 11 AM in the Chapel at Dunwoody United Methodist Church (1548 Mt. Vernon Rd Dunwoody, GA 30338). A reception will follow in the Church Parlor.
