Cleo was a member of the 1958 graduating class of Nathaniel Greene High School where he played on the baseball and basketball teams and was a member of the Drama Club; following high school he served in the US Army and Army National Guard. His career was in appliances, after retiring from Sears after 23 years of service, he owned and operated Barker’s Appliance Repairs for more than 20 years. He served as Fire Chief for 11 years for Mt. Hope Volunteer Fire Department, Station #38. He was an active member of Mt. Hope Church where he served in many capacities. Cleo was well known for being a Square Dance Caller for five clubs in the area and was a member of the National Square Dance Association and was inducted into the NC Square Dance Hall of Fame.
The family will host a reception to celebrate Cleo’s life on Sunday, August 25, 2019 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. at The Mt. Hope Church Fellowship Hall, 2400 Mt. Hope Church Road, Whitsett, NC 27377.
He was the son of the late Fredrick DeCosta Barker and Wilmoth Inez Dillon Barker Garrett; and was also preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Greeson Barker; step-father, Frank Garrett; and sister, Theresa DeRusha.
Surviving is his wife of 26 years, Virginia Lea Theisen Barker; daughters, Trinna Meek (Todd) and Dana Singletary (Jimmy); step-daughter, Dianna Stone (Volney); step-sons, Richard Chaplin (Terrie) and Donald Chaplin (Lynn); grandchildren, Rachel Wood (Tim), Rebecca Meek (Bryan), and Taylor Singletary; step-grandchildren, Carolyn Bracey (Jason), Nikki Dixon, Amber Ye (Wei), Michael Chaplin, Amanda Burkhart (Tom), and Jarrod Chaplin; and three step-great-grandchildren.
At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Hope Church, memo: Outdoor Ministries Fund, 2400 Mt. Hope Church Road, Whitsett, NC 27377.
