Ella Pentecost

Ella Jane Pentecost, 93, of Greenwood, formerly of Richmond, died Saturday, November 15, 2014, at the University Heights Health & Living Community in Greenwood. Ella was born in Honaker, Virginia, on February 23, 1921, to Henry and Lena (Miller) Miller. Ella graduated from Short High School in 1939 where she played girl’s intramural basketball. On June 4, 1940, she married Maurice Pentecost in Richmond, Kentucky. Ella attended Hillcrest Baptist Church in Richmond, taught Sunday School for many years, loved music and was a member of Sweet Adelines. Ella was a hairdresser for many years in Richmond. She loved crafting, sewing and doing alterations, and was also an accomplished quilter. Ella is survived by her husband of 74 years; two sons; Edwin Pentecost and wife Erna of Bailey’s Harbor, Wisconsin, and Larry Pentecost of Greenwood; a daughter: Sandra Hillman and husband Ray of Greenwood; a sister: Hazel Abernathy of Taveras, FL; four grandchildren: Amanda Becker, Craig Hillman, Michael Pentecost, and Kyle Hillman; six great-grandchildren: Russell Pentecost, Alex Hillman, Evan Hillman, Mitchell Pentecost, Chloe Becker, and Lily Becker; and several nieces and nephews. Ella was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Calvin Miller and four sisters: Vivian Stoner, Grace Free, Helen Montgomery, and Kathleen Smith. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 21st, at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Fosdick Chapel in Liberty with Pastor Jim Dodson of Southland Community Church in Greenwood officiating. Burial will follow in College Corner Cemetery in West College Corner.
