William Eugene “Gene” Alexander, 73, of Lexington, SC passed away on August 23, 2024. Gene was born August 8, 1951 in Columbia, SC to Randolph Eugene and Carolina Skenes Alexander. He grew up in Columbia, SC with his siblings Carol Lee Johnston and Randy Alexander. He graduated from A.C. Flora High School and was a member of Main Street Methodist Church. Upon graduation, he joined the Army National Guard. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a major in Business. He was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity and enjoyed playing club soccer for USC. While at USC, he met Ann Caughman while waiting to sign up for classes in the Elephant Room of the Coliseum. They were married and have since resided in Lexington, SC.
Gene enjoyed playing soccer. As a member of the Lexington Jaycees, he was instrumental in bringing the soccer program to Lexington County. During his career, he was employed by and a member of Woodmen of the World. As a member of St. David’s Lutheran Church, he was active as an usher, and with Lutheran Men, which he served as president of for many years. He also served previously on church council. He enjoyed cooking for church and Woodmen functions. One of things he was known for at church was helping to prepare the ashes for Ash Wednesday each year.
His enjoyed playing Legos with his grandkids, riding the golf cart, and dressing up as Santa. He loved traveling with friends and family, all things Gamecocks, riding his lawn mower, and fixing all things.
Gene is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ann Caughman Alexander; son John Alexander (Katie) and daughter Beth Ann Bremer (Mike); grandchildren Anderson Alexander, Caughman Alexander, Allie Bremer, and Will Bremer; siblings Carol Lee Johnston (Andy) and Randy Alexander; and many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased in death by his parents and sister-in-law Sandy Alexander.
A visitation for William will be held Sunday, August 25, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home - Lexington Chapel, 503 North Lake Drive, Lexington, South Carolina 29072. A funeral service will occur Monday, August 26, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. David Lutheran Church, 132 St. Davids Church Road, West Columbia, South Carolina 29170, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
