Susan Louise Cooper Gobbel, beloved wife, mother, daughter and friend, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 surrounded by her loving husband of 54 years, Billy, and her three children. Susan was born September 10, 1948 in Union, SC. She grew up in West Columbia, SC and graduated from Brookland-Cayce High School before attending Winthrop College.
Susan retired from SC State Farm Bureau in February 2022 where she worked as lead administrative assistant. Prior to that position, she worked at SC Electric & Gas and Lexington County School District #1. Susan and Billy have been faithful, serving members of Lexington Baptist Church for over 40 years. Family and friends recall Susan’s greatest joy as being the time she spent leading the church preschool ministry. Regardless of role, she always devoted herself completely and with a smile.
Susan will be greatly missed by everyone who was fortunate to know her. A true Proverbs 31 woman, she will be remembered as a kind and caring soul who always sought to serve others before herself. A couple of meaningful phrases of hers were, “Love Jesus first, then love each other” and “A mother is only as happy as her saddest child”. Susan did everything she could to make sure others knew Jesus as well as doing her very best to ensure the happiness of her children. Everything Susan said and did came from a place of genuine, unconditional love.
Susan leaves behind her husband, Billy, as well as her daughters, Shannon (Jon) Rudnicki of Lexington, Ashley (David) Culley of Marietta, GA; son, Gene (Leslie) of Perry, GA; stepfather, Bruce Cook of West Columbia, SC and brother, Dufae Cooper (Betty) of Lexington. Susan also leaves behind seven grandchildren, all of whom were the light of her eyes: Danny Rudnicki (Shannon), Emily and Amber Culley (Ashley), Will and Abby Mashburn, Graham and Molly Gobbel (Gene). Preceding Susan in death were her parents, Averil Dufae Cooper, Jr. and Mary Culbreath Cooper Cook.
A celebration of Susan’s life will be held Saturday, August 27, 2022 at Lexington Baptist Church, 308 East Main Street, Lexington, SC 29072. A visitation with Susan’s family will begin at 9:30 AM followed by a service at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children’s or Mission’s Ministry of Lexington Baptist Church or Samaritan’s Purse.
