Born on April 17, 1935, Ruth was a cherished member of her community and a devout member of Laurel Baptist Church in West Columbia since 1967. Ruth was the beloved matriarch of her family, known for her exceptional cooking, which brought joy and comfort to many gatherings. Each dish she prepared was a testament to her love and care, always ensuring to cook something special that catered to individual tastes. Her hobbies included baking various cakes and pies, which were as delightful as her presence. Ruth also found solace and inspiration in her faith. She was a dedicated reader of the Bible, transitioning to an audible version in her later years to continue her nightly routine.
She is survived by her sons, Roger Smith (Lib); Mike Garrett (Margaret); Tim Smith (Caroline); and her grandchildren, Kay Morrison (Jody), Sam Langley (Scotty), Jason Smith (Lindsey), Jennifer Hoang (Wayne), Allen Garrett, Nicole Stukes (Vincent), Joshua Smith, and Amanda Smith. Ruth was also blessed with 14 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Her Brother, Joseph Garrett (Diana) also survives her. Ruth was preceded in death by her spouse, Ira Smith; her parents, A.B and Catherine Garrett; her siblings, Jessie Hughes and Wilton (Bill) Garrett; and her great grandson, Nicholas Smith.
Services will be held at Laurel Baptist Church, 2250 Pine St, West Columbia, 29170 on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. Visitation is from 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm with service to follow at 2:00 pm. A short graveside service will follow at Woodridge Memorial Park, 138 Corley Mill Rd, Lexington, 29072.
Ruth’s life was a reflection of her deep faith and love for her family. Contributions in her memory can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, an organization that held a special place in her heart.
