Mr. James Parker Byrd, affectionately known as Jim, or “Jimmy” to those who knew him best, and “Pops” to his most favorite people, entered eternal rest December 6, 2024, at the age of 72. He was born August 21, 1952, to Elizabeth Yarborough Byrd and Hillburn Miller Byrd in Columbia, SC.
He was predeceased by his parents, sister Betty M. Byrd, and sister JoAnne Byrd Price.
He is survived by his beloved wife of over 48 years, Bonnie Mendoza Byrd; son, Dr. J. Kenneth Byrd (Dr. Heather Byrd) of Augusta, GA; daughter, Julie M. Byrd of Lexington, SC; grandson Parker Byrd; granddaughter Elle Byrd; sister, Judy Byrd Davis (John) of Hartsville, SC; sister, Sharon Byrd of Columbia; numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and countless dear friends, throughout the US and the world.
He attended AC Flora High School, followed by the University of South Carolina, where he graduated in 1975 with a degree in Computer Science and a minor in Accounting. He worked at SCANA for 39 years, as a programmer and later IT Supervisor.
Jim was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, and friend. He loved Gamecock sports, was a converted dog lover, and was a master of “dad jokes” and puns. He gave his time to noble causes, including volunteering with the Lexington High School Band, Meals on Wheels, and the Harvest Hope Food Bank, for many years.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, December 14, at 11:00 am for James Parker Byrd, at the Caughman Harman Funeral Home - Lexington Chapel with visitation following the service.
