COLUMBIA - Gladys Floyd Hutto, 78, died on January 15, 2017 while surrounded by her family. Gladys was born on July 8, 1938 in Lake City, SC and resided in the Columbia area most of her life. She was married to the love of her life, Owen Jennings Hutto, Jr. Together they had a successful business, Palmetto Carpet Co., had four children, ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Until her illness three years ago, she served her Lord in many capacities at Brookland United Methodist Church as a member of the Couples for Christ Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women, the Genevieve Kleckley Circle, numerous committees and boards, as well as sharing God’s word through education and evangelism. She loved to assist in the planning of special events at her Church and preparing her special dishes for the enjoyment of her Church family.
As the Hutto matriarch, Gladys was most happy when her family was together. She was affectionately called “Granny” by her ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Gladys was known for her strong faith in Jesus; her sweet, calm, and gracious demeanor; her gift of being a special confidante; and her gentle, kind way of getting her point across or expressing her disapproval. She was so loved by all who knew her, and she loved her family unconditionally. As a mother, she was a role model to her family, was always there to listen and offer advice when asked, and never complained about her pain. She always strived to be loving, positive, and strong for everyone else.
Gladys is survived by her husband, Owen Jennings Hutto; two daughters, Marie (Wayne) Lybrand of West Columbia, and Darlene (Thom) Walker of Blythewood; two sons, Jeff (Dana) Hutto of West Columbia, and Dean (Penny) Hutto of Lexington; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Gladys is also survived by two brothers, Johnny Weston of Spartanburg and Jimmy Weston of Great Falls; and sister-in-law, Marlene Taylor of Lexington. She was predeceased by her parents, Ellen and James Weston; sister, Nellie Clark, and an infant son, Russell Blain Hutto.
The funeral service will be held at Brookland United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2017. The Reverend Fran Connell will officiate. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Columbia. Visitation with the family will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 in the Fellowship Hall at Brookland United Methodist Church, 541 Meeting Street in West Columbia.
