George Clifford Selkinghaus

George was born in Raleigh, NC in 1937. He served in the Army Reserves and moved to the Columbia area to help start the Parr nuclear facility.

George graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1967 with a degree in Engineering. He acquired the Professional Engineer (PE) designation and worked for the SC Department of Transportation as State Roadway Construction Engineer.

After retiring from the State DOT, George obtained his Captain’s license and embarked on numerous long distance sailing excursions including bringing a sailboat through the Panama Canal. He was a past Commodore of both the Lake Murray Sailing Club and the Columbia Sailing Club.

George was also an avid woodworker and craftsman who made furniture and many other creations in his workshop.

George loved cooking and preparing meals with his loving wife, Elizabeth, of 23 years.

In his last few years, he pursued art and painting with acrylics. He was a good friend, loving father, husband and “Pa”.

George was predeceased by his parents, Walter Eugene and Jeanne MacGregor Selkinghaus; his first wife, Lula and his sister-in-law, Mary Selkinghaus.

George is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth; son, Clifford B. (April); daughter, Pamela N., all of the Columbia area; his stepchildren, John Oliver (Jessica) of Lenexa, Kansas; Ed Oliver (Barbie) of Kingwood, Texas; grandchildren, Katelyn Selkinghaus, Braden Oliver, Brooklyn Oliver, Alyssa Oliver; brother, Charles W. of Myrtle Beach; sister, Bonnie Jean McKenzie (Rick) of Wilmington, NC; Christie Cole (Larry) of Flemming Island, Florida; nieces and nephews, Susan, Kurt, Justin, Erin, Kristi and Shane.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
