Dorothy Jean Wallace Blount

Jean was the daughter of the late Charles A. Wallace and Kate Hedrick Wallace. She grew up in Columbia, SC in the heart of Shandon, graduating from Columbia High School in 1944 and she received her higher education from Mary Baldwin College and The University of South Carolina.

Jean was married to the late William H. Blount, Jr. of Pompano Beach, Florida. During their daughters’ high school years in the 60s and 70s, the playroom of their Harden Street home was the gathering place for many a teenager. Jean was always available to lend a non-judgmental ear to each and every one of them. She was also active in many community services including the United Way of the Midlands, the Girl Scouts, Central Carolina Community Foundation, USC Educational Foundation and many others and was recognized for her philanthropy with numerous awards including Humanitarian of the Year in 1991.

After her daughters were grown, Jean joined her husband in the operation of the family business, Wallace Concrete Pipe Company, Inc. After retiring, Jean and Bill enjoyed not only their home on Lake Murray, but also enjoyed exploring the country in their Holiday Rambler.

Jean was an active member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church where she served on the Church Council, sang in the choir and was a member of the Alter Guild.

She is survived by her children, Dottie Blount, Judy and Donnie Humphries, Barbara and Danny Pierce; her grandchildren, Kate and Ben Davidson, Sara and Trevor Holt and her great grandson, Wyatt Davidson. She is also survived by her sister, Kathryn Wallace Salley and her many beloved nieces and nephews. She always had a soft spot for the many animals her daughters and granddaughters rescued into the family and is survived by too many to name.

As per her wishes, there will be no formal funeral services. There will be a private family burial at a later date. Her girls ask that you celebrate Jean’s life as she did with a dirty martini, a good steak and a bottle of wine.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice or to St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, Columbia, South Carolina.
