Deborah Hutto Johnson, 68, of Lexington, SC passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2023. “Debbie”, daughter of the late Sam B. Hutto and Bernice Hutto of Columbia, SC, beloved wife of Ronald F. Johnson, went to be with the Lord after losing her battle with cancer. Debbie was a sister to Samuel Keith Hutto (Angie) of Sullivan’s Island and predeceased by her brother, Michael Hughes Hutto.
A graduate of Columbia College, Debbie had a brief career as an administrative assistant until becoming a full-time homemaker. Debbie was a cherished mother to Ronald F. “Ronnie” Johnson, Jr. (Mara), Steven Wade Johnson (Amber), Kevin Christopher Johnson (Leah), and the late Leslie Anne Johnson, all in the Lexington, SC area. She was also a loving grandmother to six grandchildren who adoringly called her “Gammy” and multiple nieces and nephews. She was a lifelong best friend and sister-in-law to Judy Johnson Gowan. Although these were her blood relatives, she was a mother figure to all of those who frequented her home over the years. She was a quintessential second mom to her three nephews, Michael Gowan, Jonathan Gowan, and Andrew Hutto as well as her son’s numerous friends.
Debbie truly lived life to the fullest, enjoying the simplest pleasures. She loved spending quality time with her family, especially when the sun and water were involved. During the summers, you could find her walking along the beaches of Garden City or cruising Lake Murray. One of Debbie’s best qualities was her ability to entertain, whether through a one-on-one conversation on the porch or by throwing a party at her home with 100 guests. Words cannot describe how full of life she was; she had a childlike joy that was hard to capture, and she was the ultimate example of how a mother should love her children unconditionally. She was especially proud to have reared three sons, all of whom became attorneys. She selflessly served her family and was a friend to everyone she encountered. One of the ways she showed her love and selfless devotion to her family was by cooking large family meals almost every Sunday. There was nothing quite like hearing her joyful laugh and it will be missed by everyone who loved her so dearly.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Northside Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 10, 2023 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
