Lewiston
Surrounded by his family, Lionel “Lee” Landry, 92, died peacefully at Androscoggin Hospice House on Wednesday, December 3.
He was born in Lewiston to Pierre Landry and Marie Lebel Landry, attended Holy Family School and graduated from Lewiston High School, class of 1940. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army Air Corps in which he served during WWII.
Lee was known as an expert auto mechanic and worked for many years at Jewett Ford and Auburn Motor Sales. Later in his career he started his own business, Lee’s Auto Repair, gaining many loyal customers. He also taught automotive repair at Lewiston Adult Education for 20 years. He was an avid gardener, and every summer looked forward to his tomato crop ripening. He was known as an all-around fix-it expert and enjoyed tinkering in his basement workshop. When he visited his daughters, he took great pleasure in working on home improvement projects in their houses. There was no project too complicated for “Pep” to complete, and his grandchildren invariably tagged along as his helpers. Lee loved playing pool and cards with his friends, keeping up with current events, and having spirited political discussions.
Lee was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus and Ste. Croix Parish where he served on the parish council and volunteered in many capacities. He also volunteered as a valet parking attendant at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center until the age of 89. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Simonne (Coté) and his five daughters, Pauline Beare and husband John of California, Suzanne Janelle and husband André of Saco, Louise Landry and husband Bob Silverstein of New York, Claire Leal and husband David of York, Elaine Rosen and husband Mark of Massachusetts; 13 grandchildren, Renée (Beare) Fitzpatrick and husband Thomas, Joseph Beare, Danielle (Beare) Thompson and husband Ryan, Elizabeth (Beare) Tucker and husband Ryan, Nicole Janelle and husband Jake Donaldson, Céline DinhJanelle and husband Anthony, Ethan and Lillie Silverstein, Benjamin, Samuel and Zachary Leal, Evan and Olivia Rosen; and five great-grandchildren, Connor, Brennan and Grace Fitzpatrick, Simonne Thompson, and Anaïs Janelle. His brother, Fernand Landry, sister-in-law, Muguette Coté, and many nieces and nephews also survive him.
His family will miss his kindness, patience, strength and sense of humor.
Many thanks to the wonderful staffs of Montello Heights, the Lewiston-Auburn Kidney Center and the Androscoggin Hospice House for their devotion and loving care.
