AUBURN- George William Menke III (aka “Big Bill”), age 85, passed away peacefully in his home in Auburn, Maine on November 16, 2024. Born on August 6, 1939 in South Portland, Maine, Bill was known as a quiet, gentle giant with a witty sense of humor. He leaves behind a legacy characterized by dedication, both in his professional and personal life.
Bill is survived by the love of his life, Sheila Foss Menke, whom he married on June 22, 1963. After seeing the tall brunette across the room, his life was forever changed. Bill, a basketball player and Bachelor of Science graduate from Norwich University, demonstrated a lifelong commitment to knowledge and excellence. Bill proudly served as an officer in the Army for four years, bringing the same level of commitment and discipline to his civilian career. He worked with Calcium Carbonate in Quincy, Illinois, from 1965 to 1986 before transitioning to a role in Industrial Sales, where he remained until his retirement in 1991.
In addition to his professional and military achievements, Bill was an avid outdoorsman. His love for bird hunting, bird dog training, fishing, and golf provided him with many joyful moments, often shared with family and friends. Another cherished pastime was playing cards, especially when surrounded by his loved ones.
Bill's family was the cornerstone of his life. He and Sheila raised their family in Quincy, Illinois where they enjoyed many close friendships. They moved back to Maine after Bill’s retirement and shortly thereafter bought a condo in Naples, Florida so they could enjoy winters in sunny Southwest Florida. Bill looked forward to going to Naples each year; he loved the community in which they lived and the great friendships they created.
Bill is also survived by his daughter, Laura Patin, and son-in-law, Arthur Patin; his son, William (“Bill”) Menke, and daughter-in-law, Sarah Menke, and son-in-law, Tom Boehk. His legacy also lives on through his grandchildren, Garion Boehk, Paige Boehk, Heidi Jesensky (and husband Christian Jesensky), Hannah Kohler (and husband Dimitrius Kohler), Hayley Bond (and husband Chase Bond), Isabella Menke, McKenna Menke and Holly Patin; and great-grandsons, Elijah Floyd, Micah Floyd and Arminius Kohler. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lucetta Menke, and his daughter, Heather Boehk.
In lieu of a traditional service, the family has chosen a private commemoration of Bill's life. They express their gratitude for the thoughts and condolences shared by those who knew and loved him. Bill will be remembered not only for his accomplishments but also for the quiet strength and warmth he brought to every life he touched.
Until we meet again. John 11:25-26
