A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 2:00pm. at the First United Methodist Church, 1411 Broadway, Lubbock, Texas with Dr. Craig Curry and Dr. Shera Atkinson officiating. Cremation Services are under the direction of George Price Funeral Home, Levelland, Texas.
Mr. Hensley was born on September, 3, 1957 in Levelland, Texas to R.E. Hensley Jr. and El Lea Werner Hensley.
Mr. Hensley had an active trial practice and enjoyed the representation of many agricultural cooperatives across the state, including PCCA. During his career, he earned a reputation in the cotton industry as a knowledgeable and capable advocate. He was a frequent speaker at cotton industry meetings on litigation, internal governance and legislative matters. He received a Distinguished Service Award in 1999 from Texas Agricultural Coop Council. Mr. Hensley was an honors graduate of South Plains College and Texas Tech University. He earned his law degree from Texas Tech’s School of Law in 1982. He was Chairman of the Board of Barristers and won the Mock Trial National Championship as a student. Mr. Hensley received the Lewis E. Powell Jr. Award for Excellence in Advocacy by the American College of Trial Lawyers and has continued to serve the law school by providing scholarships and training students for competition as an adjunct professor of law. His Mock Trial teams have earned state, regional and five national championships, earning him the title of 2010 Coach of the Year. His civic involvement includes serving as president of Civic Lubbock, Inc. and a member of Texas Tech University Chancellor’s Council, First United Methodist Church and Ronald McDonald House Charities. Mr. Hensley has a room named for him at the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge, he was also a member of several other organizations.
Survivors include his mother: El Lea Hensley of Sundown, Texas; his sister Dusty Anne Lay and her husband Chuck of Friendswood, Texas; his brothers: R.E. Hensley III, and his wife Teresa of Sundown, Texas and Scott Hensley and his wife Linda of O’Donnell, Texas. He is also survived by three nephews, three nieces, three great-nephews and two great-nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father R.E. Hensley Jr. in 1982.
