He was a lifelong member of Low Gap Methodist, a church founded by his grandfather with other friends over a century ago. The church was built on donated Riddle land which was settled and claimed through land granted to his grandfather in the mid-1800’s.
During his life of nearly a century, along with his faith in God and his love for his wife and family, his work ethic was prominent. He worked from a young boy until early adulthood as a farmer, then with his marriage in 1940 came work in the mines. When the mines closed, he worked for brick masons, carpenters, and U.S. Steele. In the mid-1950’s he was hired at the Leeds Cement Plant, employment for which he was always thankful and praised God, and was a faithful employee until retirement.
After retirement, his love of home could be seen by all passing by his blooming flower gardens and carefully groomed 3 acre lawn. Friends often mentioned having seen Mr. Riddle out working in his yard. He loved his vegetable garden and was looking forward to enjoying his tomatoes this year.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved and lived by God’s Word and, when he could no longer drive to church, would not miss his daily Bible study. He was a humble man who lived in thanksgiving for God’s blessings.
Precious memories are cherished by his three daughters, Rose Katherine (Kathy) Riddle Roberts Harding, Janice Ilene Riddle Myers, and Grace Amelia Riddle Kelly. Grandchildren include: Bethany Roberts Blevins, Christian Roberts Holt, Constance Myers Seymour, McDaniel Coupland Myers, John Matthew Myers, Leanna Kelly Morrow, Cynthia Kelly Eubanks, and Marilee Kelly Daniel. He is survived by 18 great-grandchildren and a sister, Virginia Riddle.
Visitation will be held on Monday evening, May 19, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the Kilgroe Funeral Home at 1750 Ashville Road, Leeds, Alabama 35094. The Funeral will be on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, with a graveside service at Low Gap Methodist Church cemetery immediately following.
Though he will be missed greatly by all who knew him, his family and friends rejoice in knowing that their father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and good neighbor is out of pain and in Heaven with his Lord and his dearly beloved wife, Lena.
