Gerry was born in Winnipegosis, Manitoba in a stone house just outside of town. He lived there for 2 summers before moving to Cupar, Saskatchewan. In 1946, they moved back to a farm in Winnipegosis where he attended South Bay school until the beginning of grade 9. He left school to begin work on the railway from Dauphin to Sioux Lookout, Ontario. After encountering too many bears he decided to try firefighting with a bulldozer north of Sioux Lookout. He had severely burned his hands there so decided to move into road construction around Dauphin, Manitoba. After 5 years he moved to a different construction company in Foxwarren, Manitoba where he worked on Highway 23 from No.10 to Elgin. At this time he met Louise and they were quickly married. Dean and Wayne came along and the adventure to Alberta began in 1979. There, he was able to work on heavy duty equipment as a mechanic before a heart attack sent him to an early retirement.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Louise; two sons: Dean (Jo) and Wayne (Debbie); nine grandchildren: Cassie, Britny (Mike), Taira, Torie (Peter), Corbin (Kayleigh), Tyler (Mercedes), Ryan, Ethan, and Megan; eleven great-grandchildren: Carter, Lucas, Megan, Mason, Peter, Annabelle, Elizabeth, Lily, Peyton, Oliver and Asher; brother, George (Shirley); sister, Louise; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Cremation has taken place. A family gathering will take place at a later date.
