Beatrice Adelaide Werner, a caring, sweet and deeply religious woman, died June 19 at Cornwall Manor. She was 90. Born in Greencreek Township, OH, near Fremont, Beatrice graduated from Fostoria High School, Fostoria, OH, and Huntington University, IN, with a B.S. in education. She taught elementary school for four years before being called to serve in Ybor City (Tampa), FL, where she taught at St. Paul Evangelical United Brethren Mission School, graduating the school’s first sixth grade class. Again, she felt the call to leave after five years. She enrolled in United Seminary, Dayton, OH, to study for a Masters of Religious Education, but never completed her degree having met her future husband, Josiah H. Werner of Allentown, a senior at the school. Following his graduation, they were married on Aug. 23, 1959.The newlyweds moved to East Greenville where Josiah began his ministry as an Evangelical United Brethren pastor. He went on to pastor E.U.B. and United Methodist churches in Palmerton, Telford, Easton, Shamokin, Columbia, Fairless Hills and Christiana before retiring to Lebanon. While raising her family, Beatrice was active in the United Methodist Women, both locally and on the district level where she served as treasurer. She also briefly worked as a substitute teacher. While living in Lebanon, Beatrice and Josiah were members of Covenant United Methodist where Josiah served as visitation pastor. They were active members of the Generations Sunday School Class. Beatrice volunteered for the RSVP program, working for the Visiting Nurses, Good Samaritan Hospital and at Hyman Caplan, giving more than 500 hours. After moving to Cornwall, Beatrice volunteered at the Curiosity Shoppe. The daughter of the late Hazel Notestine Leedy and Otto Guy Leedy; and sister of the late Melvin, Lynn, Kermit and Betty Leedy, Beatrice is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Douglas and Pingjuan Werner of State College and Jeffrey Werner of Newtown; a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and David Godleski of Charlotte, NC; seven grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held in Cornwall Manor at Zerr Chapel, Cornwall, on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 11 a.m. with a Viewing from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
