Peter Hitt, 90, passed away on June 22, 2022, in Dallas, Texas. Peter was born in Detroit, MI on April 16, 1932, to Eldridge and Christine Noeker Hitt. Peter graduated from Evanston Township High School in Evanston, IL and Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y., after which he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1957, and in the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1957 until his honorable discharge as a Captain in 1966. Following active duty, Peter attended Syracuse University and in 1959 married the love of his life, Betsy Buell. After graduating from Syracuse in 1962 with a degree in architecture, Peter and Betsy moved back to Chicago, where Peter began his career in architecture. Most of his 23 year Chicago-based career was spent at Perkins & Will, where he ultimately became a Senior Vice President and General Manager and a member of the Board of Directors. After years living in the cold, and with their two sons out of the house, Peter and Betsy moved to Texas. He took a job running Marshall Erdman’s Southwest Regional Office in Dallas in 1985, and in 1992 left Marshal Erdman and moved with Betsy to Lakeway, TX where he started his own architectural consulting business before retiring full time in 2001.
Peter was a gifted athlete, starring on his high school basketball team and track and field team, where he specialized in the high jump. Peter kept active throughout his life, playing golf and tennis, traveling and spending time with his wife, family and many friends scattered across Texas, Illinois and beyond. Peter and Betsy visited many places throughout the years, but their favorites were Africa, Australia, Nepal, Greece, and Italy. Following Betsy’s passing in 2010, Peter moved to Dallas and lived out the remainder of his years at Highland Springs retirement community. He continued to play golf until his mid-80s and managed to get a hole-in-one and shoot his age before he was forced from the game for health reasons.
Peter is preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Betsy, and his brother John. He is survived by his sister Julie O’Sullivan, his sister-in-law Sally Buell Sheinberg, his sons P. David Hitt and Jeffrey Buell Hitt, his daughters in law Barbara Hitt and Melissa Hitt, his grandchildren Elizabeth (Michael) Gentile, Alex Hitt and Katherine Hitt, and his great-grandchild Emmett Gentile.
Peter’s Celebration of Life will be held on July 16 at 2 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home in Leander, Texas.
