Born and raised on a farm in Waterville, Kansas, she married the love of her life, Loyd Earl Cunningham, on February 24, 1958. Above all, she was a mother and a wife to a soldier, a heroine of her own rights. As an Army wife, she learned to measure time in terms of places rather than years. Stationed in Kansas, Missouri, Germany, Colorado, Maryland, Virginia, and Alaska, she was a woman of adventure, strength, and patience.
In the early years of her marriage, she stayed at home to raise six children. She worked various jobs; those of most significance was when she worked for the National Endowment for the Humanities and when she worked at a title company as a legal document recorder, bookkeeper, and title examiner.
She is survived by two sisters; Marilyn and Dianna; her six children; Kim (Rick), Sheri (Brad), Elizabeth, David (Ellaine), Karen (Chris), and Lesley; ten grandchildren; Adam (Becky), Sarah (Chris), Chris (Kaitlin), Jennilee (Mike), Amanda (Joe), Samantha (Shane), Austin, Lauren, Janie, and Jessica. Rounding out her legacy are her eleven great grandchildren; Madison, Cameron, Mia, Olivia, Hendrix, Deviny, Bryant, Joseph Jr., Rouge, Arya, and Clara. Dorothy was so loved by many and blessed with nieces, a nephew, their families, and close friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Loyd, her parents, William and Lela, step-father, John, and sister Karen.
There will be a Celebration of Life in Liberty Hill and a private service on Tuesday, November 21st at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery. She will be laid to rest next to her husband, together forever.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.wcfishleander.com for the Cunningham family.
