Please accept my deepest condolences to the whole family. Connie was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew her. Rest easy Connie!  No one will be the same but you will all be ok…someday. On that day you will smile at the thought of Connie and feel her heavenly hug upon you. Until that day arrives, please take care of each other, mourn in your own way and allow yourself and others the grace and patience to do so. Thoughts and prayers to all for peace and comfort now and forever. Love to all

We played Scrabble and she let us use the dictionary to come up with words instead of just challenges.We made our own rule (for scrabble). I remember football in the backyard and long drives out to Inks Lake. 

We cooked rhubarb pie with rhubarb from her mother’s garden in Nebraska, and made poppyseed breads for Christmas. 

She launched my interest in photography which I passed  onto  my camera onto my son along with my camera.

I had that recipe for the rhubarb cake pie that she copied for me and gave me on a recipe card. I baked it many times over the years. It was my husband’s favorite. It wasn’t that she was a particularly great baker, but it was that we did it together. 

The ink eventually faded on that recipe card, and as our families grew and matured and responsibilities filled our time, I saw Connie less and less for many years. We caught up from time to time and I got to hear about her very,very beloved grandchildren as her family grew.  Just like with her sons, her adoration for her grandchildren was endless. They had to feel that love too.

I was busy showing up for my children now. Showing up on the sidelines of their games and school events, cooking with them, capturing pictures with my camera, laughing with them until my stomach hurt. 

I recently reconnected with Connie and was able to tell her how much she meant to me and it has been one of the most meaningful things for me in my life to be able to do in my life. I wish I had done it sooner.  

I am so grateful to have meet Connie and Kelly and the rest of the family. I will hold her in my heart forever. I can hardly believe Kelly is gone too. It feels like too much. 

Connie seemed to think we should be going to the beach. I am half convinced I may show up to her service, dressed for the beach. Connie, I will miss you, and  I will see you at the beach, my friend.

The first day I meet Connie, at 14 years of age, I sat with her and her family  in her in the living room of her duplex and talked for three hours straight. I can’t even remember what we talked about but I remember laughing so hard my stomach hurt.  Connie possessed a levity that I do not, and that … I appreciated. 


She lived across the street and in a time before distracting cell phones to keep me busy in my room alone, I sought her company when I was lonely, which was often. I was a child of divorced and busy, otherwise occupied parents. Over time, we developed a deep affection for one another, and I also formed a sibling like relationship with Kelly too, where we bantered and verbally sparred but also made each other laugh harder than almost anyone I knew.

What an amazing thing it was to me that this family allowed me be a part of theirs, that Connie would sit for hours and talk with me.  I can’t tell you the feeling of worth that she gave me, something I needed as an insecure young woman with a dysfunctional family.. It changed me. This person, with nothing to gain from it, gave me her time and attention and affection. 

She showed up for me. She showed up for me, in a way my own parents never did. Literally, she was there  on the sidelines of my soccer games even when I mostly was on the bench. When I was coming in last or first (I did both) at cross country meets she was at the finish line, and there with her camera at my graduation, and my wedding.  She took my wedding photos. 

She showed up with steamer trunks full of dorm room supplies when I left for colleage, a room to live in when I returned, and with her heart and mind always open to me. She made me feel normal, valued, and she validated my hurts and my joys. 

We watched many band concerts and opera dress rehearsals together listening for warm tones of  the oboe.

Bob, Jason  Jennifer and family. Our hearts are broken to hear of Connie's death. Our hearts and prayers are with you all. She was a wonderful person and family member. She will be missed greatly but we all have lots of wonderful memories.  God Bless you all and love always.
