Thomas Joseph Schreiber Sr., 84, passed away Feb. 14, 2011. He is survived by his loving wife, of 62 years, Helen; seven children; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four brothers; and two sisters. Tom's quick wit and sense of humor endeared him to family and friends. In 1943, Tom enlisted, at the age of 17, in the Marine Corps. As a scout and sniper, his service included time in New Caledonia, Guam, Guadalcanal, Ulithi, and Okinawa, where he was wounded in action. Tom was on the first naval transport to enter Toyko Bay, learning Japanese en route. He received his honorable discharge in 1946. After marrying Helen in 1949, they started their family in the suburbs of Chicago, moving to California in 1959. Tom retired from a career as a cement finisher in 1988. He and Helen then moved to Las Vegas in 1991. Visitation will be 4:30-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, at Palm Mortuary, 7400 W. Cheyenne Ave. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1811 Pueblo Vista Drive. Burial will follow at Palm Mortuary, 6701 N. Jones Blvd.
