

In Loving Memory of Sonia Jacinta James
August 5, 1952 – April 7, 2025
Sonia Jacinta James, beloved daughter, sister, mother, godmother, and friend, was born on August 5, 1952, in Micoud, St. Lucia, to Thomas and Percita James. The ninth of eighteen children, Sonia’s life was deeply rooted in family, faith, and a profound sense of care for others.
From a young age, Sonia had a strong and enduring faith. She accepted Christ as a young girl and professed her faith in the Catholic Church, which remained a guiding light throughout her life.
In 1976, Sonia moved to the United States to pursue her calling in healthcare. She attended New York University School of Nursing where she obtained her Bachelor of Science and continued her studies at NYU where she became a nurse practitioner. Her 33 year career was marked by compassion, dedication, and an unshakable commitment to healing and service.
Sonia had a zest for life that was unmistakable. She loved music and dancing, delighted in trying new foods, and found joy in traveling. A spirited and nurturing presence, she was a devoted godmother to many, always ready with a warm smile, heartfelt advice, and loving support.
She is survived by her children: Kurt James and his wife Chantelle of St. Lucia; Curtis James of St. Lucia; Bertrand James and his wife Shardi of New York; Laureen James of Nevada; & Julian Estaphan II and his wife Toya of New York
She is also survived by her siblings and their spouses: Leroy, Spencer, and Frances James of St. Lucia; Virginia James of Saint Crois; Cassilda, Humphrey, Keith, Cheryl, and Vern James of New York; Bryan James of Florida; François James of Georgia; & Lyndell James of Nevada.
Sonia also leaves behind a cherished legacy of love through her grandchildren, who brought immense pride and joy into her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, several of her siblings, her beloved daughter Monica LaFerve, and her grandson Eddie LaFerve.
Sonia’s kindness, humor, and unwavering love for her family and friends will never be forgotten. Her legacy of care and compassion lives on in the lives she touched and the hearts she warmed.
Funeral services will be held on April 29 at 12pm at Palm Northwest.
