She was born to the late Edmund and Margaret Benefiel in Lincoln, Nebraska on August 3, 1930. She had six siblings; Donald McKinney, Edmund Robert Benefiel, Norman Benefiel, Nancy Windholz, and Sandra Maserang, who all proceeded her in death. She has one surviving brother, Jack Benefiel.
Shirley was married to Richard Connelly for 56 years. He predeceased her in 2010.
She had a large, blended family that included: Three children; Edmund, George and Sharon. Nine grandchildren; Edmund Leslie, Catherine, Samantha, Joseph, Emma, George, Dawn, Richard and Jessica. Fifteen great grandchildren; Tanner, Lauren, Conner, Tucker, Tallon, Peyton, Chason, Britney, Brandi, Gavin, Jordan, Tabbitha, Ember, Leighton and Kane. And two great-great grandchildren; Ila Mae and Luna Grace. She was dedicated to her family and loved taking care of all her grandchildren.
Shirley graduated high school in 1947 from La Junta High School in La Junta, Colorado.
She retired from Nevada Power Company in 1992 after over 20 years of service.
Shirley’s passions were walking with her friends at the Meadows Mall, volunteering at the Salvation Army, collecting Precious Moments figurines and involvement at the First Methodist Church.
Services for Shirley will be held at Palm Mortuary on 7600 South Eastern Avenue on March 15, 2022, at 2:00pm. A celebration of life reception will be held at 9940 Corbett Street, following the service. In lieu of flowers, you can donate to Dementia Society of America.
