great-grandchildren, mom or mother to her daughters, and Shirley to everyone else, has
died. Born at home on the prairie in western North Dakota to Elem and Myrtle Peterson,
the second of five children.
Her mother Myrtle gave mom the moniker “Bunny” after
much debate with her father over the name Shirley. She grew up not realizing her name
was Shirley until she entered grade school. Mother died surrounded by the love and
laughter of her 5 daughters in the early morning hours of December 30th in Las Vegas,
NV.Mom loved eating egg-salad sandwiches, organizing family gatherings, sharing ancestry
stories, expressing her opinion, loving her fourteen grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren, and of course her five daughters and their husbands/partners. She
appreciated a good whiskey press (just one please), perfume, proper table manners,
great posture, antiquing and collecting treasures, reading biographies, challenging
convention, and organization. Growing up, it was a requirement that regardless of what
was said or done each day, all of her daughters had to hug and kiss her goodnight and
share an I Love You. This habit continued throughout her life. Mom taught us to challenge the status quo (and sometimes the experts), to speak up, to take risks, to count your blessings, to help the less fortunate, to be kind, to get up and move forward. She counted her blessings and always reminded us to do the same. A fiercely strong, practical, and private Scandinavian (88.2%), mom requested the no
muss no fuss celebration of life. A tradition in her family. No funeral - no memorials - no
flowers - no obituary. Well…we did break one promise mom by writing this obit. If you
would like to honor her life and death, she would have appreciated that her death was a
reminder to do a good deed today, however big or small. Bunny, Shirley, or mom is survived by her children Teri (Gary),Tamara (Jeff), Dixie (Ken), Stacey (Lance), Ann (Todd). All those fabulous grandchildren, Sean (Jackie), Jared, Alicia (John), Emma (Cal), Maxwell, Lily, Jacob (Jayda), Ellen (Mondo), Tony, Abraham, Wade (Josie), Nolan (Anja), Grace (Danny), and Clair. Those perfect great-grandchildren, Alexander, Olivia, Isis, Westley, Dagny, and Magdalena. Her beloved siblings Bruce,
Peggy, Brandt, and beloved sister-in-law Martha and all of their lovely families. Also
loved, Troy Anliker and Jeff Rempfer. She was preceded in death by her dear parents, her
beloved brother Bob and beloved in-laws Ralph and Mary.
As mom always said upon bidding farewell…
“I Love You. Goodbye For Now”.
