Sheila Marie Shannon (formerly Wiseman) passed away on October 8, 2019 at Summerlin Hospital, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was born on March 23, 1937 in St. John’s Newfoundland, then a Crown Colony of the British Empire. Her father, James Patrick Wiseman, was a sailor and longshoreman. Her mother, Mary Frances Tilley, was a homemaker. Sheila Wiseman grew up on Long’s Hill, in St. John’s, living with the large extended Tilley family. Sheila Wiseman excelled in school, and graduated from Our Lady of Mercy in St. John’s. Following high school, she immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, where she settled with her parents in Bay Ridge. Sheila became a dedicated fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and when they moved to Los Angeles in 1957, she later became a fan of the New York Mets.
Sheila began working in Manhattan with an engineering firm as a typist before joining the secretarial pool at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company at 10 Rockefeller Center. She remained with the company for almost 20 years, and eventually becoming a supervisor with the company.
On August 7, 1971, Sheila Wiseman married John J. (“Joe”) Shannon of Jersey City, New Jersey, an attorney. They settled in Staten Island, New York, where they would remain for the next 14 years. Sheila resigned from Liberty Mutual in 1973 before giving birth to her first son, John Patrick. In 1976, Sheila gave birth to her second son, Joseph Edward. The Shannon family later settled in Branchburg, New Jersey in 1985, where she later was a founder and volunteer of a youth tennis league. Following her husband’s retirement, Sheila and Joe relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2004.
Sheila was known as a formidable team doubles tennis player, which she played into her early 60s, and was dedicated to physical fitness and an avid sports fan, following all local New York teams, and more recently, the Vegas Golden Knights. Her only known vices were coffee, chocolate, and an occasional glass of wine. She was fond of traveling, and in her last years had taken trips to Alaska, Hawaii, the Canadian Rockies, Napa Valley, Lake Tahoe, Toronto, France, as well as several trips to San Diego and Disneyland with family.
Sheila spent her remaining years happily with her family. She was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Geraldine, Gloria, and Anne, as well as her brother Michael. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, John of Las Vegas, her sons John and Joseph of Las Vegas, her daughter-in-law Jennifer, Jasmine, and grandchildren Benjamin, Alexander, Emma, Danica and Sofi.
A Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 20, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and again on Monday, October 21, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Palm Cheyenne Mortuary, located at 7400 West Cheyenne Avenue, Las Vegas, Nevada 89129. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 21, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church located at 1811 Pueblo Vista Drive, Las Vegas, Nevada 89128.
