Robert J. Read, 87, of Sugar Hill, GA, passed away peacefully Sept. 14, 2014, in Cumming, Ga., with his daughter by his side. He was born Aug. 23, 1927, in Clearfield, Pa., as the eldest of four children. He graduated from high school and then went into the U.S. Navy serving 1945-1951. He met LaVonne Alsbury in California and married her Jan. 2, 1947 at the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, and over the radio on Bride and Groom on ABC. His parents were not able to make the trip to the wedding, so they listened to it over the radio broadcast in Pennsylvania. They were married for 66 years before LaVonne's passing June 7, 2012. He was a service writer for Las Vegas Dodge until he retired. He loved golf, boating and fishing on Lake Mead. They had lived in Las Vegas two different times over the years. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, LaVonne Read; parents, Ralph A. Read and Myrtle M. (nee Powell) Read; sister, Jeanne M. Read; brothers, Edmund L. Read (went down with his ship, USS Hobson, April 26, 1952); and Roy R. Read. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and friend to all. He is survived by his daughter, Jeanne (nee Read) Gardner and her husband, Stephen; sons, James Read and his wife, Bette, Richard Read and his wife, Nancy, John Read Sr. and Randy Read and his wife, LuAnn; 10 wonderful grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters-in-law, Lorraine (nee Alsbury) Lynch and Lena Read; cousins, Bonnie Winters and Rodney Borst, and Jim Read; and nieces and nephews. He will be missed by this big, loving family and friends. Viewing will be 4-5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26 for the public and 5-7 p.m. for family. Public viewing again 9-10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, with services following at 10 a.m., all at Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St., Las Vegas, NV 89101. Burial following at Palm Memorial Park.
