Richard Edward Schmidt

A graduate of Kansas University he went on to enjoy an extensive and successful career as a corporate leader for top scientific technological companies. Starting his career at Beckman Instruments he went on to hold senior level executive positions with G.D. Searle & Co., American Optical and I Med Corporation. From 1986 to 1990 he went on to become President and Chief Executive Officer of Milton Roy Corporation. In 1991 he joined Newport Corporation as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. From August 1993 until February1995 and from November 1995 until May 1996, he held the additional position of President. From December 1990 to September 1991 Mr. Schmidt served as a consultant to Sundstrand Corporation, an aerospace and power transmission company. He served on the board of four major companies throughout his retirement. Throughout his career he was able to explore the world where he developed a passion for travel. He loved taking cruises and discovering new places. His hobbies included fishing and playing golf, he loved music and movies and loved spending time with family and friends. A loving husband and father he was a very caring and generous man with a wonderful sense of humor. His wife Beth, his three children, Cheryl Tuvell, Linda Pfeifer and Doug Schmidt, and his seven grandchildren, Jeremy, Jacob and Christian Schmidt, Ryan and Garrett Pfeifer and Lauren and Jonathan Tuvell survive Richard. He was well loved and admired and will be greatly missed. A service in his memory to celebrate his life will be held this Saturday December 4, 2010 at Palm Mortuary, 1600 South Jones Blvd. at 3:00pm with viewing from 2:00pm to3:00pm. In lieu of flowers the family asks that a charitable gift be given to Faith Community Lutheran Church at 2700 South Town Center Drive, Las Vegas Nevada 89135.
