Naomi Delores Jackson Goynes succumbed peacefully, Thursday, May 2, 2024, while surrounded by her family in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was born October 30, 1933 to the late Dr. and Mrs. W.S. Jackson in Memphis, Tennessee. She was the third of five children.
In 1956, she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. In that same year, she and Theron H. Goynes, who is originally from Texarkana, Texas, were each hired, just months apart, for their first teaching jobs in Nashville, Arkansas.
He asked to walk her to the faculty social and the rest is history. The couple married two years later. From 1960-1964, she and Mr. Goynes taught students on a Navajo Indian Reservation. They both moved to Las Vegas late in 1964 with their young children and signed teaching contracts with the Clark County School District. They've resided in North Las Vegas ever since and have been married 65 years.
Mrs. Goynes went on to earn even more degrees. She completed her Masters of Arts Degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Music from Northern Arizona University in 1970 and in 1977, she completed her Educational Specialist (ED.S) Degree in Educational Administration with a minor in Curriculum from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. She was a jack of many trades throughout the years: a Kindergarten Teacher, a Districtwide Curriculum Designer, a Reading Specialist, a High School Dean and a Middle School Assistant Principal. She devoted 42 years as an educator. In 2005, Theron H. and Naomi D. Goynes STEM Academy opened to honor their devotedness to education.
She was loved by all who knew her, for her genuine kindness, her dedication, and her positive and encouraging spirit. She is survived by her loving husband, Theron H. Goynes; three children Kimberly Goynes, Byron (Lydia) Goynes and Pamela (Romero) Goynes-Brown; five grandchildren, Bobby Owens III, Mahlia Posey, Joi Goynes, Michael Owens and Joshua Goynes; one great-grandchild, Ember Owens; One sister, LeeEtta Lewis.
She was blessed with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A visitation for Naomi will be held Friday, May 17, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Palm Mortuary - Downtown, 1325 North Main St, Las Vegas, NV 89101. A funeral service will occur Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Second Baptist Church, 500 Madison Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89106. A committal service will occur Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, 1325 North Main St, Las Vegas, NV 89101.
