Nancy Richmond Bennett was born February 23, 1957 in Camden, SC to Nathaniel and Dorothy Richmond (now both deceased). She lived in South Carolina, Virginia and Delaware through elementary school and moved to Geneva, Switzerland, attending the International School of Geneva until her junior year of high school. Some of her earliest and best memories are of times with her parents , sister and brother, traveling around Europe, skiing and exploring. After Switzerland and a brief time in Delaware, Nancy and her family moved to Charleston, SC, and she graduated from Summerville High School, class of 1975.
After high school, Nancy attended Duke University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and started what was to become a 40-year career as a pediatric care nurse. Along the way, she also received a Masters of Science in Nursing from the Medical College of Georgia (now Augusta University) and worked in various capacities over the years providing care to patients and families. She worked in different jobs and in different states (South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, New Mexico, and Nevada) and was able to understand much about the medical profession through her very experienced lens. Besides her family, nursing and family-centered care were her passions. She would reminisce about many patients that touched her life and marvel at the humility and gratitude she felt from being able to help others at critical times in their lives. She had a servant’s heart and was so very happy being able to use her skills to ease other’s pain and confusion in illness.
In 1980, Nancy married John Bennett after dating for a few years. They proceeded to have two children, Lauren Bennett (m. Hawken Brackett) and Thomas Bennett (m. Michelle Reimus Bennett, son John Paul Bennett). Her best times were with her family, going to Clemson football games, camping around the south and the west, enjoying many musical concerts in a variety of places, vacationing at the beach or at various theme parks as the kids were growing up, and supporting John, Lauren, and Thomas and their families any way she could. The family will always remember the days of Nancy babysitting while John’s various bands practiced at their house, band trips with all of them supporting John’s many gigs, or the many hours of practice and play of Lauren and Thomas in their various activities—music, horses, scouting, etc. She was the heart of her family and was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, and friend. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Nancy also leaves behind a sister, Cynthia Richmond (m. Mark Lewis) and brother, Michael Richmond (m. Susan Richmond).
Please remember her family during this time. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Children’s Hospital of Georgia in Nancy’s name is appreciated: (https://www.augusta.edu/giving/childrens.php).
