Monroe LeRoy Mitchell was the first child to Fannie Carson and Jack Mitchell in Flint, Michigan on July 12, 1935. Monroe was married to Lovie Roundtree and from that union they had two daughters, DeVonia and Sonya Mitchell; both whom preceded him in death. His oldest daughter, Leasha Pitts, who he always called his sweet girl, resides in Sacramento, California. Monroe completed his high school education at Central High School, and received his spiritual development at Quinn Chapbell Baptist Church. As a young man, he went to work for the General Motors Company. He worked in marketing and sales for the A/C Delco division. There he was a devoted worker in the improvement of working conditions and salary increments. Monroe has always been a strong believer in human rights. He attended the March On Washington in D.C., where he was inspired by Martin Luther King’s famous “I Have A Dream” speech. While living in Sacramento, he was President of the Oak Park Community Arts Organization. This group supported young students and adults who pursued a career in fine arts and jazz music. He was also President of the 100 Black Men’s Chapter in Sacramento, California. During this time, the size of the chapter grew and he was a motivation force to young men through out the city. He was also a member of the Camilla City Ski Club. He helped organized many of the club activities and was coach of the baseball team. Monroe met and married the love of his life, Lillian “Mama Lil” on June 16, 1984. From that union, Monroe gained a son, Darel Greene. After retirement for both Lillian and Monroe, they moved to Las Vegas and continued their journey of wonderful companionship and love. Here they had met many new friends and enjoyed a wonderful social life. Immediately upon his arrival to Las Vegas, he established himself with the 100 Black Men of Las Vegas Chapter. Monroe was a man of our Lord, faithful husband, father, brother, grandfather, role model, mentor, and friend to many. Julian Mitchell and Sabrina Clark preceded Monroe in death. His memory will be cherished by his wife Lillian, a devoted daughter, Leasha; a son, Darel Greene (Frieda); brothers, John Mitchell (Sonny), Sam Clark, Rhett Clark (Brenda), Kim Clark (Lois), and Dennis Clark (Jan); sister, Sandra Waters; grandchildren, Marvin Pitts, Monitikko Mitchell, Isaac Greene, DeSonja Pitts, Marquisha Pitts, Marvana Pitts, Marvin Pitts II, DeQuandra Mitchell, Lovie Mitchell, Shartika Hogan and Alyse Greene. He also leaves behind a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and numerous friends. The Lord delivered His mercy to Monroe on Thursday, July 9, 2015.
