Mary Ellen (nee Sugent) Russell, age 80, passed away on May 5, 2016 following a long battle with cancer. She was the wife of Jack Don Russell, with whom she shared 57 years of marriage. Jack and Mary Ellen have been residents of Los Prados community in Las Vegas since 1995. She was a loving wife, mother and "Nanny" to her three grandchildren. Born April 21, 1936 in Clarksburg, West Virginia, she was the eldest daughter of Andrew and Mary Ellen Sugent. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1954 then from St. Mary's School of Nursing in 1957 both in Clarksburg, West Virginia. While working as a RN at Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, she met Jack who was then serving in the U.S. Navy. They were married in 1958 and moved to Jack's home state of Texas. She later became a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. As a CRNA she worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, Navarro Regional Hospital in Corsicana, Texas, and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Dallas, Texas. She later left nursing to support Jack's new consulting business in Dallas. They both retired in 1994. Mary Ellen was a member of St. John Neumann Parish in Las Vegas. She loved to paint, sew, play gold and bridge. She loved her family and loved spending time with her grandchildren. They loved their "Nanny." She and Jack enjoyed their retirement traveling, playing golf and gambling. Mary Ellen was preceded in death by both of her parents and her sister Carolyn Bailey. She is survived by her husband Jack; son, David Russell and his wife Maria; daughter Ann Stites and her husband Tim; three grandchildren, Bobby Scott, Russell Stites and John David Russell; sister, Anne Westerman and numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Neumann Parish in Las Vegas on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John Neumann Parish or the American Cancer Society.
