Maria “Nena" S. Urrabazo, also known as “Foxy", lost her battle with Covid-19 early in the morning of June 3, 2020. She gave it her all and left this world a fighter, the same way she lived in it. She was born in Muzquiz, Mexico on May 28, 1941. Her family immigrated to Texas when she was just a child. She was the oldest of 12 children and her family were migrant workers throughout the United States. She eventually made her home in Las Vegas with Pasqual Hernandez Urrabazo, whom she married on May 14, 1960. She worked hard her entire life, and although she only had 7 children of her own, many more consider her their “Mom" or “Grammy.”
When you entered her home you would be drawn in with a hug; the smells of a fresh, homemade meal; and the sounds of laughter. “Nena" was a straight-shooter and spicier than her salsa. The world was lucky to have her for 79 years and although we know she had more stories to tell, her great legacy will live on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
We are overwhelmed with the pain of losing her. Our love and gratitude for her are boundless. Although she has left us too early, we find comfort in the fact that her spirit remains in our hearts and her blood flows through our veins. We will think of her when we see roses bloom or eat a fresh flour tortilla. We will feel her near us when we sit and laugh with loved ones.
Maria was preceded in death by her parents, Fidel and Guadalupe; and son, Alfredo Caban. She is survived by her 7 children, Pasqual Jr. (Norma), Michael Anthony "Tony," Joel David (Marisela), Sarah Ann (Gustavo), Ruth Amanda, Angela Lynne Simmons (Matthew), Marcus Ruben (Alma) and Isaiah Hiram (Steven); siblings Ezekiel, Fidel, Beatrice, Josie, Elizabeth, Linda, Peter, Jose, David, Rebecca, and Daniel; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Due to the nature of the Covid-19 pandemic and the effect it has had on the family, all services will be held online. Friends and family wanting to participate are invited to watch the Celebration of Life service online on Wednesday, June 10 at 8:00pm. A separate online graveside service will also be streamed live on the Palm Eastern Mortuary Facebook page at 3:00pm on Thursday, June 11. There will be no public viewing. A drive-by memorial will also be held at 5020 N. Valadez Street, Las Vegas, 89149 on Thursday, June 11 from 7:30pm-8:30pm. Friends and family may drive by the house and view a photo montage of “Nena” in the front yard. An area will be available for family and friends to drop off condolence cards if they wish to do so.
